Ok,

So, bad news, I had a leak in my Canon A520 housing (not a flood). However, it was bad enough that some water dripped into the camera. So, I need a new one now....

I saw that Canon has since released the A530 and A540 models which look a lot like the A520.

Does anyone know if the Canon A540 will fit my A520 housing? (WP-DC60)

Thanks!

I don't think so. The camera looks different. After that leak, make sure your housing is still working first. It would be cheaper to buy another A520. They should be on closeout.

Generally digital cameras change so much, so fast, that housings are strictly for the one model. You can always take a look at the Canon site and see what model # the newer camera takes. If it's different from the one you use, the answer is no.

Great, thanks. There isn't anything listed on the Canon site for the newer models. Also, I was able to get a closer look at the 530 and 540. You're right, they are different on the back. I'll check out closeout prices for the 520.

The housing still works. I was able to use it on subsequent dives (camera still worked, but slowly started going bad over the course of a day or two). I think there must have been a grain of sand or hair on the seal that I missed when it leaked.

I don't know if this helps - but I have a Cannon S50 w/ the cannon enclosure. I know for a fact that the Cannon S70 model also works in my enclosure - so it seems that cannon is fond of using the same camera body for at least an extra generation.

Everyone once in a while, you get lucky. That's rare, though. Look over the Canon website and see which housings support which cameras. It's pretty clear. There are only a few housings that support more than one camera, and of those, they usually support only two, maybe three at best. And that's rare.

Most new models of camera have buttons rearranged, moved to new places, in an attempt to "optimize" "improve" "make it better" or, more realistically "generate new sales of new housings". ;)

I take that back - I think originally, there was literature that showed the enclosure that works for the s50 to work with the s60 and s70...Im not sure that it doesnt work, but since then, they have come out with a new enclosure for the s60 and s70.

However, the one I have is listed to work with the canon s30, s40, s45 and s50.

Many times I have seen canon use the exact same camera frame/body with different internals - usually higher mp is the only improvement. I think this is happening more frequently with other manufacturers too.

Thanks all. I actually went ahead and purchased another A520 on sale. The other ones do not fit my enclosure. Not sure if I can be any more paranoid about leaks than I already have been... We'll see how things go on the next trip.

I had to go out and correct myself...again... the s60 and s70 are actually different and DO require their own enclosure :P
Every time they make the screen bigger, they have to move the controls around to compensate. It's a double-edged sword. :)
