I just joined the ScubaBoard. I'm thinking about getting a Canon 20D for my AW (above water) and UW photography. I don't see any threads about this camera here. Does anyone have it and a housing? Comments or suggestions? Thanks!

I got a 20D when they first came out and I love it. I also shoot a Nikon D70 in a Sea and Sea housing. I like the 20D much better, I am just waiting to get the Subal housing.

if you would like some further info, send me an email. I test out and use most of the equipment on the market and can give you some honest input.

Best of luck, Mike

The Subal housing is going to be a bit much for my wallet. What do you think of the Ikelite housings? What are the pro's and con's?

Thanks

Graham

Yeah, the Subal housing is quite expensive, its basically the top notch. I usually recommend Sea & Sea, however I spoke with our rep recently and they have chosen not to (Sea & Sea Japan) produce a 20D housing. This is very unfortunate.

The Ikelite housing is not a bad housing. Its a nice way to take your DSLR underwater. The controls are a bit tricky at first until you get the hang of them. You really need to watch the alignment of the control knobs and the buttons on the camera itself. I will be getting a 20D housing in from Ikelite shortly for demo.

If you are looking for a reasonably priced housing, then Ikelite is your best choice. Send me a PM and I will give you some more info if youd like as far as pricing, etc.

If you are buying a 20D kit, I would look at getting the 17-85 lens kit with the body. its a much better lens than the 18-55. However depending on what you are going to be shooting, you may decide to buy the body only, and get the lenses appropriate for your shooting purposes.

Any q's, just let me know.

Good luck, Mike

I already have the 20D with the 17-85 lens so that's good. I'm just struggling with spending thousands of dollars for a housing I will probably only get to use twice a year. The camera package will end up costing as much as a couple of year's diving.....

Does anyone rent these things?

Just ordered my EOS 20d yesterday (w/17-85 lens) but am very willing to spend what it takes to protect it at depth. I'm really looking forward to using this camera.

So...anybody actually using it now with Subal/Ikelite or any other housing? Does the extended battery grip fit in the case? How do you like them? What did they cost? Any input for me?

Thanx.

MJR,

I haven't used the camera yet but there is an excellent gear report about the camera in the Ikelite housing written by Matt Segal. I have a link on my web site in the Resources for Photographers section. I really like the way the Ikelite housing allows full manual or full ttl by the touch of a few buttons on the back of the housing.

Good luck.

Swimswithsharks,
Thanks for that lead to Matt Segal's review, as well as Ken Rockwell's comparison of the 20D and D70 for photography in general at your website. They will help me make a decision on camera and housing.

Something to think about.....does the 20D do short video?? I would want my below camera to be video capable.
