You didn’t mention which certifying agency, but if it’s the big one (PADI) the answer is yes, under supervision. I do not know about other agencies, but suspect they are similar.
With PADI, you can do Open Water Training Dive One after Confined Water Training Dive One. This is, of course with your instructor. After that open water training dive, you can even go on excursion (fun) dives – again, under supervision. Confined Water Training Dive Three is the prerequisite to Open Water Training Dive Two.

I certified with SDI and we did our confined in just 3 sesions.
People should be aware that the fact that PADI has 5 confined water dives required does not mean that they must be done on five separate days. For example, CW 1 is done completely in the shallow end of the pool, learning the most basic of skills. With a long enough session, many instructors will do CW2 on the same day. If they don't announce "Now we are moving to CW2," a student may assume that the combined session is one CW dive.

I'm with PADI btw...sorry i keep forgetting theres other ones out there.
I'm not sure when I'm doing my OW dives!
I'm sure the diving people would tell me...
Says on the website that it's 2 weekends of my choice depending on weather...probs want me to do all 5 confined ones before i go out...whatcha think?

Yes. That is how it is normally done.

Correct, and since CW1 uses next to no air, it is very common to go with the same tank between those two. I always do a disassemble/assemble then, though. Students have to do 5 assemblies, and that is a good time for one of them.
