This question has always interested me. There are clearly MANY more people on this board that claim they dive DIR than have actually been trained by GUE.

Personally, and I put my name on the top of this list, I don't think you can claim to dive DIR until you have actually been trained by the guys who teach it...

What do you guys think. Can you dive DIR if you have never taken a GUE course?

Matt,

I guess you are not "DIR" until you have a GUE class. But, if you dive with GUE trained divers and dive with them, and they teach you the how to dive the configuration, then I would say yes. Have I confused anyone yet?

That's a pretty asinine question, Matt. DIR is a philosophy, approach, whatever you want to call it. GUE is a training agency. The original GUE instructor cadre were certainly DIR, but who trained them if not GUE? So I guess that they can be GUE instructors and not be DIR? What about those of us who have been diving this way for over 10 years- but who aren't GUE trained? Do we get a special dispensation?

LOL....

I doubt George ever took one...

JJ either.

I'm DIWC...me and only me....Doing It Wicked Cool. I invented it, so I can "be" it. :)

Despite his lack of support for me in other threads, *ahem*, I agree with Matt. :)

Just because you have a BP/Wings, doesn't mean you are "DIR." I might say that I am attempting to follow some of the principles that I've learned about DIR....actually, I think I'd avoid the term all together. It causes too much animosity.

Better yet, don't label yourself...just dive the best way you know how and always try to improve.

I'm not quite sure I deserved an "asinine". I was just asking for an opinion...thank you for stating yours.

the choice: Does anyone care

Or Another: Does taking a GUE course make you DIR?

I mean, GUE trains "DIR" divers - so technically yes, you need GUE training to be "DIR". But, I learned about it from my cave instructor Terrence Tysall. DIR is not new, it is a new way to package was very good style of diving. I think it is hard for some people to think it is just about gear, but DIR is a mindset about safe diving, good buddy skills, and good in water skills.

...and it is a resounding NO from the GUE/DIR community. As I understand it (feel free to correct me), this is one of the main reasons for certing the DIR-F class, namely to cut down on the so-called DIR "experts" that just took a DIR-F.
