I don't see it as a big deal. On paper, its a cool feature. In practice, its really not that useful.

Go to Oceanics website. Even on the 4.0's shipped after November 1st 2011 had the buddy check feature removed due to patent issues.
Talking with the factory sales rep and tech support, the 4.0's and 4.1's are identical, other than a firmware update that allows them easier servicing and technical debugging if you send it in for future service.
They rolled the model number from 4.0 to 4.1, but according to the factory discussion I had on May 21st 2012, they're functional identical.
So just I bought a VT 4.0 with transmitter on sale for $799 on-line, where-as the 4.1's are still in the $1000-1100 range.

Correct. And to be clear - anything shipped from Oceanic after 11/1/11 was then referred to as a 4.1 and had Buddy Pressure Check removed. Any 4.0 subsequently returned for service will be replaced with a refurbished 4.0, maintaining Buddy Pressure Check. Any 4.1 returned for service will be replaced with a 4.1, without Buddy Pressure Check.
