Slightly misleading title as I'm already a PADI IDC-S with plenty of experience of how little money there is to be made teaching diving, especially in Malaysia or Indonesia (50 ringit/£10 a student on Mabul). I've taught in SE Asia and now in the UK and have started getting into tec on the side.

My questions are: as I'm getting older and really need something which will pay a reasonable wage, is become a tec and rebreather instructor over the next couple of years going provide that? What sort of cut do instructors get? I know the market is small in the UK, but how about SE Asia? My plan is to move to Malaysia or Indonesia in a few years with my wife who is a nurse and can work there. It's more of a life change than a holiday so I need a real income. I am also a commercial diver (HSE 1), though work is scarce atm. That could be a sideline.
