Hey all, as of lately, I'm looking for resorts for my honeymoon and trying to pick a destination. Can anyone recommend a resort in French Polynesia that they have visited, maybe a dive operation as well? Thanks.

Anyone else??

I'm going with my wife to French Polynesia (Bora Bora and Rangirioa) for our 20th wedding anniversary this June. I've made all the arrangements through Lucien Schmidlin at www.etahititravel.com. He is a friend, an avid diver, and owns Top Dive in Bora Bora. I would highly value his opinions regarding which islands and what accommodations depending on your interests, your experience, and your budget.

Excellent site. I've been looking at it all night since you sent it my way.

I second the recommendation for TopDive as a dive operator. Their resort in BoraBora may not be the most romantic on the island or its motus, but it is definitely wonderfully designed for divers. You can also dive with them in Moorea or Rangiroa if you care to move around a bit. Excellent operator!

what about Raie Manta Club Dive in Rangiroa and Tikehau the main highlight in Rangiroa is that divers are likely to come across sharks in ankle-deep water as they are on the atoll famous drop-offs and the two ocean passes.Among the species to be found around the atoll are : grey reef, silky, silver tipped, white tipped, black tipped, milk, nurse, lemon, hammerhead (from December to march), and tiger sharks (rare). Leopard rays (November to March), barracuda, turtles, dolphins, mantas (July-August) and so many more.

Hi Money....just a question for ya...

What exactly is a Milk Shark? And i do believe you mean Eagle Rays (November to March)

Anyhoo, yes both Top Dive and Raie Manta run good ops in Rangi.

But, if you are into spending the money to have the nicest hotel i would recommend the Kia Ora and Blue Dolphins.

Mike:

I should have known you know where to stay! I think Lucien has us staying at Kia Ora, but I'll check. Thanks for the info!

And, KidK9, enjoy your trip!

Hi KidK9

My wife and I spent our honeymoon at Kia Ora Resort on Rangiroa in Feb/Mar 2004. Fantastic place but not cheap (although not much in Tahiti is!). We went the whole hog and had an over water bungalow. It was excellent and I would definitely recommend this resort, and if you can do it, go for the over water bungalow option.

The diving at Rangiroa is mainly at the two passes (Tiputa and Avatoru). They are drift dives on an incoming tide so that you are swept INTO the lagoon. I used Top Dive as they offered the best deal and found them to be fine. There are 3 or 4 dive operators to choose from and all pick up from the hotel, however Top are just a 5 min walk up the beach, so they are also the handiest (other than the hotel's own dive shop which was very expensive). I did 8 dives, 7 of which were Tiputa, and one of these (which also happened to be the last of the 8) rated as one of my best dives ever. My log book entry for that particular dive was as follows:

"Two manta came through up shallow just after entering. Current (finally) running right this time! Stopped at the corner & watched SCORES of sharks sitting in the current - greys, black tips and white tips. Then went out in the blue before riding the current through the pass. Saw another manta almost stationery in the current and was able to watch it from 5m away! Brilliant! Easily the best dive of the week!!"

Note that the current has to be running right for these dives to 'go off', and this was the only time we got it while I was there.

I can give you lots more detailed info if you are interested. Just send me a private message on the board or email me at lfindlay@xtra.co.nz.

Regards

Lee
