there are other types of freshwater sponges in the St. Lawrence as well. they are small about 3-4" high, various shades of green, and resemble a scrawny tree without leaves... I've seen them on the rothesay and the conestoga (I think they tend to only grow close to the surface)

We have those kind in Kingston, I think they kind of like the metal wrecks, here is a fine example
