Hello this is my first post my name is Joe and I work at the Plantation Inn Dive Shop in Crystal River Florida. It is the manatee capitol of the world and the only place you can swim with manatees in the wild basically.

My manager has a 350D and an Ikelite housing for it. I searched the forums and found it talked about a few places but no one confirmed if the 400D will work inside the 350D Ikelite housing. Can anyone confirm?

Thanks,

Scuba_joe

Joe.

Welcome to ScubaBoard!!!

Go Into the Forums, Find IkeLite, and then ask them right here on the board, you will get a prompt and honest answer from them!!

I have folowed that link and ended up going around in circles.
Did you find an answer?

I have a 400D EOS and have found a 350D housing at a great price but finding the honest answer from someone who actually knows is a mission an a half!

I have called Ikelite, read reviews on both cameras, trawled every forum and even called every underwater housing place listed on line in the country, but everyone says they don't know... and that they've never been asked that question... I am stunned.

Someone HAS to know!
How did Pakman do it??

Scuba Joe,

I thought Pakman posted here or on Wetpixel (under the same name) his photos of the little button extensions he made for using a 400D in a 350D housing.

You might have to register on Wetpixel.com (it's free) and then search his name for posts he made to find it...

If all you want is to shoot availalble light photos of the Manatees (been there and done it many times) the mods might make the 400D usable enough.

If trying to get full Ikelite DS Substrobe functionality with their strobes there is slight differences in the TTL protocol from one model to the next. Not a lot, but some.

I've shot every Rebel from the original Digital Rebel to the T1i. I just got the proper housing for each and kept taking pics :)

Good luck with your search!

dhaas where did you get the pic of the manatee? Zeeman answered my PM with this:

Heya, yes, it will work, but the buttons (menu, delete, play etc) will not work. I have modified my housing (quite easy) to make it work though. Basically, all the buttons on the right side of the camera (the important side) are lined up properly.

The buttons on the left side are not (due to the larger screen on the 400D vs the 350D.)

So you will be able to just plonk it in and shoot, you just wont be able to review shots whilst diving (apart from whatever review time you set for yourself after each shot). You will be able to adjust ISO, f-stop, shutter speed, WB etc though.

I'd show you a pic of the mod to make the other buttons work, but I'm away form my housing and wont be near it until the 5th, but hopefully that'll help you out

So basically I think it works you just dont get teh left buttons so you can shoot just fine.

scuba_joe,

Manatee was shot out in the murky Crystal River a few years back. Barely 5' - 7' viz but had my Tokina 10-17mm Fisheye lens on :)

Zeeman is right bout the left side buttons being inaccessible. if you can live with it.

I'm not sure if Canon's eTTL protocol if using an Ikelite DS series digital substrobe has any differences as Canon is known for making very slight changes....

So you may have to shoot manually (or not?)

Good luck....

The modification CAN definitely be done!

Zeeman has my old set-up, which is a 350D housing modified for a 400D (I sold it to him when I bought a 5D). Once done, you can have full functionality on the 400D.

Problem is that I haven't kept any photos of the mod work, so I suggest you PM him with a nice reminder...

Amigos,

I'm sure someone who wants to tackle this can make it work.

If anyone's interested I have a Rebel XT (350D) Ikelite housing I am going to list along with clean Rebel XT camera body plus Pelican sized 1600 case to hold a total system.

Photos below and will be listing them in the classified ads later this weekend.

Email ASAP if you want prices on each item.

Good shooting!
