I am currently preparing a single tank backmount setup (with aluminum BP, single tank adapter and 2 cam bands) for my wife and wanted to check if using rubber friction pads (picture below) on the tank bands is recommended or deprecated.

The universe will collapse into a singularity if you use one of those.

Joking aside, put it on and try it; did the tank move? If it moves try it with the rubber pad, it if doesn't leave it off.

Who cares what others think about it?

Get a Freedom Plate, it comes with rubber bits preinstalled.

If you know how to operate a cam buckle you don't need a plastic pad

If the size works out that you can bridge across the the STA, it can protect painted tanks from getting scratched by the STA

While I don't use an STA, it provide protection from the wing book-screws in my case. I use ones like these: DGX Friction Pad

The Halcyon cam bands come with a rubber grip sewn in. I guess these would be the next best thing.

It's not plastic, it's rubber, and IME not enough friction between the worn stretchy nylon band and the nice smooth tank wall is a common enough occurrence.

I use 2 inch bicycle tubing at any place I don’t want stuff to move around (cam bands, back up lights) or prevent webbing harness getting abused (slots thru backplate or STA) and it does the job very well. Just an option.
