Hello! My fiance and I just got certified in the Puget Sound (Seattle) a couple weeks ago and are in the process of planning our diving activities on Kauai for our honeymoon. If anyone has any stories to share regarding specific dive charter companies, we want to hear about them!

We are also debating whether to rent the few things that we need (2 BCs and one reg)for the week long rate or not. Are there lots of good shore dives on this island that have close parking? Enough to keep us busy for the 7 day rental?

Any information on "must dive" locations would be appreciated.

Aloha and welcome to the world of diving!

Great to hear your certification news! First I would say that the shore diving on Kauai is great! The two primary locations can keep you busy for multiple days without much problem. However, you'll find that those two sites are the only ones you'll likely dive from shore here. While other locations are listed as "dive sites" on the island... only Koloa Landing near the town of Poipu (south shore) and Tunnels beach north of Hanalei (north shore) are utlilized or offered by any dive company on the island. Ahukini and Prince Kuhio sites are only backup sites used for poor weather alternates and lack the excitement of the other two sites. If you were to do a guided tour at Tunnels first - you could spend a day or two easy exploring the inner and outer reef there on another day on your own. I would suggest that route though as you would be benefit greatly from the guided tour first. Koloa is straight forward North - South navigation - but to see the truely awesome marine life there - a guide helps initially. Koloa rarely has any advanced conditions as it is very protected. Tunnels is a morning only site for the most part and does have strong currents at certain times. Dont leave the island without a boat trip to Sheraton Caverns! Turtles, turtles, turtles - and the lava tubes are awesome!

I lead tours and teach here with Fathom Five Divers (Koloa town). If I can help you with any information to make your Kauai trip awesome - just let me know. It doesnt even have to be dive related. Just drop me a message.

best of island wishes to you both.

Also pick up the Kauai guide book. It will help with many things when you are over there.
