So,
I'm going on a family vacation to Australia in March. There is an understanding that although my bro-in-law and I are the only divers, we will be given one day to dive in Cairns. My goal is to make it worth the whole trip. I'm looking for an outfit that will do a loooong day of diving. Hopefully up to six dives. I have my AOW and will posssibly have my Rescue Diver cert by then, my bro-in-law has been diving since training with the navy SEALS in the late 70's. We're looking for variety as well as scenery. I don't need to do 130ft dives unless there is some outstanding reason to do so (i.e. a cool wreck or huge piece of plant life that's a must-see).
Any information or tips anyone can give me will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Scott T

I am not a local, but I never saw any day trips out to the reef that allowed more than three dives. It's a fairly long trip out there and back. You might be able to get in more by talking to a dive operator on Green Island or Fitzroy Island about diving on their fringing reefs, but I don't think it will be quite the same.

Have a look around on underwater.com.au | Charter Boats - Charters and Day Trips | Far North Queensland for possible dive shops.

not many places do 6 dives in 1 day

if you get a charter boat you could do what ever you wanted if you had enough air i guess

most of the boats do 3-4 dives a day

Thanks for the replies. Does anyone know of any outfits doing night dives? I could always do the 3-4 during the day, come in and take a nap, then head out for a couple of night dives.

The reef from Cairns is a good 90 min plus one way trip. (depends on the speed of the boat). The cattle boats will get you three dives - you might find a smaller operator that will custom create a trip for you. Checkout www.diveoz.com.au - The Biggest Site for Australian Scuba Diving Info for more local info.

Its a long boat ride to get to the edge of GBR and almost 4 hrs to get to the good sites. Day trip boats at best you could get 3 dives if you are lucky. If you are coming from the USA I would not only do a day trip. At a min I would have 3 and 4 day liveaboard. Its a long plane ride for only one day of diving.
