Hey folks! I've been trying to find a shop in Cairns that can rent a DIR gear (BPW + long hose config reg + strap fins) in Cairns for a few days but was unable to find anything online. I prefer diving in this config as that's what I've learned (GUE certified), and the liveaboard I'm going with in two weeks (for 3 days) offers only recreational sets that I'd be uncomfortable using.
I'd love to have my equipment with me, but it's a much longer trip not focused on diving, so I could not.
Anyone, anywhere you know of?

This is the only option I'm aware of: Dive Equipment Rental | Cairns Scuba Tech Most things here are geared towards the casual recreational diver. BPWs are pretty rare and a full DIR setup even moreso.

The site doesn't mention longhose regs, but based on the other equipment listed, I'm sure he could set them up if he doesn't have it by default.

My only experience with him was buying a 2nd hand BPW when he was just getting the business up and running, so can't comment on that side of things, but he seemed nice enough.

When I'm diving up there Cairns way in winter yeah I dive all stiff in DIR stuff

But in Summer man, it's all loose having about as much fun as one can have

No, more fun, the best fun, quite liberating!

Good topic for discussion "Are DIRs able to reverse engineer themselves faced with a change of gear."

Or do they just not dive?

Be cool man, enjoy the trip, the ocean will certainly camoflage any issues you may imagine you'll have

and nobody is looking anyway

Cool!
Hey it's as compliant as I'm ever going to be dude, there's a long hose there giving me the shits
plate, one piece harness, whoops I've got a Perdix on my wrist and if anyone thinks I'm going to
clip my spg to my hip where I have to unclip it to look, well they've got more bats in their belfry
than me!

As a long time dive pro here in Cairns I have to agree with Ranga. There are no commercial tours that offer DIR set up and it's really non existent here.
As Ranga pointed out, you should be able to hire a BPW, but for the rest maybe use on board recreational gear that's usually included in the cost.
Or were you planning some personal tec diving somewhere like the lakes?

So, the question is asked yet again:
Is it about the diving or the gear?
I thought anybody worth their salt can make anything work and have fun doing it.
Totally agree 😊
