Man dies after failing to resurface in diving expedition
The 64-year-old was on a group excursion when the alarm was raised and a multi-agency search and rescue mission was launched

A man has died after he failed to resurface during a diving expedition.

Officers from North Wales Police were called to the scene, off the coast of Caernarfon, just before 3:30 pm yesterday.

It followed a call to the Maritime and Coastguard Agency that one member of a party of divers on an excursion had failed to resurface.

A multi-agency search was launched, and sadly the body of the diver was recovered. The man, 64, was pronounced dead at around 7 pm.

North Wales Police shared a statement on their Gwynedd North Facebook page.

They said: “Sadly, a 64-year-old man has died whilst on a diving excursion off the coast of Caernarfon.

“The man was part of a group of divers who had gone out but did not resurface at the same time as the rest of his group.

“Police were called shortly before 3.30 pm yesterday (12/9) by the Coastguard to ask for assistance with the incident and a multi-agency search was launched. The diver was recovered but was sadly pronounced dead at around 7 pm.”

Detective Inspector Andrew Gibson said: “I would like to give my deepest condolences to the family and friends of the man at this very sad time.

“Police are now supporting the local coroner with their investigations into the circumstances of this incident which is not currently being treated as suspicious”.

A spokesperson for the Maritime and Coastguard Agency earlier said “At 3 pm on 12 September, HM Coastguard were alerted to an overdue diver in Caernarfon Bay.

“Porthdinllaen and Trearddur Bay RNLI lifeboats were sent alongside Holyhead Coastguard Rescue Team, the search and rescue helicopter from Caernarfon, North Wales Police and specialist divers.”
