Hi, new to the site. My 12 and 14 year old daughters and I are experienced swimmers and snorkelers and will be taking some SCUBA classes and training in the next 2 weeks, and then we will be going to either Cabo or Kona. We have done a lot of traveling in both locations, but obviously no diving. Since my girls and new to diving, I imagine that several factors will influence which location will be a better fit for our first real dive vacation. I imagine these might include currents, availability of professionally run ops that can gently handle newbies, etc. Can you please share you thoughts on why one location would be better for us versus the other as far as us having a positive first dive vacation, and possibly recommend any operators?
Thanks in advance,
Jon

I would go to Kona. For new divers, the clear waters in Hawaii would be a benefit plus the Manta dive or snorkel is a must do. Still some good deals in Hawaii just got back from a trip in a condo at Mauna Lani at a rate of $100 per night on VRBO. As far as operators, I would choose an operator with a smaller boat. I can recommend Patrice at Pacific Rim.

I'd go to Kona, also. There are some great ops there, clear waters, easy/shallow dives without much current and lots to see. Also, some great shore dives.

Kona! Your girls will ALWAYS remember the Manta Night Dive Dad took them on in Kona. Make a lifetime memory.

Just got back from Kona, and loved it because of all the shore diving. Don't have to run a schedule, dive when we wanted, and didn't have to deal with other divers. Then we did a charter boat dive...ugg I hate charter boats. Shore diving is easy at Kona and you will get to see the exact same things as on a boat dive. In fact many of the boat dive sites can be shore dove.

There wasn't enough to current to mention on our dives either, even though the swell was up a little bit.

Another vote for Kona... was there a few weeks ago. While we did a few deeper dives, a lot of the sites had plenty to see in the 20-40' range. We dove with Kona Diving Company and really enjoyed it. They are safe, professional and lots of fun. I would certainly feel safe sending new divers to them. Just make sure where ever you go, and whom ever you dive with, let them know you are new and let them know any concerns or hesitations you may have. Any responsible dive op will pick a good site and adjust the profiles to help ease you into it and let you gain experience and confidence.

If you do go to Kona - you have to do the Manta night dive... if you aren't comfortable diving at night yet, you can snorkle it as well. But it is amazing!

Another vote for Kona. Great clear water, lots of excellent dive ops and a great vacation spot too. Cabo, OTOH is a party town and the diving is pretty limited. Lots of currents and mediocre viz in my very limited experience. Try not to miss the manta dive in Kona...it's an easy safe dive, even for beginners.
