Does anyone here use a YS90 Duo with a c8080 and PT-023 housing? If so, I really would appreciate some help. I purchased the strobe just before leaving for a trip to the Lembeh Straits for some of the best muck diving in the world. Unfortunately I could not get my strobe to work properly. Being the PT-023, I am limited to using the fibre optic slave setup. I could not get the strobe to sync with the camera, not matter what I tried. The strobe was set to Auto 1 with the slave switch on. It was firing, but all the shots were dark. The fibre optic cable seems to be fine, and when watching the rig while shooting, the strobe seems to fire correctly. However, when I took a shot aimed at a mirror, while the strobe fired, the photo showed that it had not fired in the reflection. I have tried the strobe set to Auto 2 although I am sure that the 8080 does not use a focusing pre-flash. I have also set the camera to slow-flash, but all I get is a complete over exposure.

As a result, I was forced to take all my trip shots using the internal flash on the camera, and the results were mediocre to say the least.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks
Alan

If no one with a 8080 can help I will PM you my mobile no. - I'm sure we can work it out . Just to confirm - you have the same strobe as me ?

I use the C8080, PT023, and YS 60. I went with the Matthias TTL replacement bulkhead which I would recommend. You can find it here:

I haven't tried the fiber slave solution, but I have been happy with the results I have gotten - Full TTL and a better (more robust) bulkhead to boot.

I am not using the YS-90 but this setup on my PT-23, so far fires 100% of time! Direct connection one on one.

Just one more question - which mode are you using - P , A , S or M ?

The best settings on the camera with a fibre optic is to set the flash to Slave , power setting 1.

Set the strobe to Slave ON , Auto 1 .

That's the easy bit . If you have the camera set to P (Auto) mode you will never know which aperture the camera is going to use , therefore you will not know which aperture setting to set the strobe to . The same applies to S (shutter priority) mode.

Setting the camera to A (aperture priority) is better so that you can match the camera and strobe settings , but the camera may then use a shutter speed that is too slow and you will then get either motion blur or you will not be able to hold the camera steady enough to get a sharp picture .

M (manual) mode is the best answer for using a strobe with a fibre optic cable and for underwater photography in general anyway .

As Henryville and f3nikon have said , hardwired TTL is the way to go - you will never look back .

If you need more help just ask , I am more than happy to meet sometime and assist to get your setup working 100% .
