I recently purchased the Olympus 8080 with PT023 case off of e-bay. I went to Scubatoys this weekend to purchase the YS-90 auto digital strobe with ttl cord. I found that the PT023 had a 5 prong attachment for the ttl cord that is proprietary. In order to use the YS-90 do I have to buy an adapter or is it best to go ahead and get the Ikelite case for a lot more? I noticed that the Olympus flash with underwater case and ttl that fit the PT023 was even more for a short armed strobe. Thanks for your help.

Forget the Olympus flash and housing , it is useless for anything other than macro and close up stuff .

I use the Matthias bulkhead with my 5060 / 7070 / YS 90 Auto and am very happy .

The Ikelite housings are beter but more expensive , and AFAIK you can only get TTL with their strobes . Although more expensive , The DS 125 has a built in focusing light which you are probably going to want as the Oly cameras do not focus well in low light conditions .

Andy, why would that be?

It just isn't powerful enough and doesn't have a wide enough coverage angle for anything other than really close up stuff. Because of it's shape it is also more difficult to aim properly .

Gosh Andy, I completely overlooked the word "FLASH" in your other post. I thought you were talking about the housing. My bad, I'm sorry.

Definitely get the Ike case. I had one I recently sold on Ebay, and it was great. I have a DS125 strobe, and it's even a bit much for 50-foot dives. You'd probably do OK with the DS50. Any reason you don't want TTL?

Yes, I definitely want ttl. I ordered the Ikelite case today through scubatoys with strobe package 3944.41 which I understands comes with a ttl syn cord and DS50. Did I make a mistake? I may stil be able to change it if they have not placed the order. Thanks.

Personally I would have gone with the DS125 for the focus light if money isn't such a big issue . You will need the focus light in low light conditions , especially for macro stuff . And it also doubles as a dive light for night dives .It will save you having to buy a focus light separately . But the DS 50 is a good strobe .Just my opinion .

I don't think that spending an extra $350 for a DS125 just for the focusing or aiming light is a very good value. You can always mount a dive light ($50) on the housing and have it pointing at your subject, with the focusing light on the strobe you are forced to aim the strobe only in one direction. Plus the focusing light can run down the strobe's battery at a much faster rate. I have focusing lights on my Ikelite Ai and 150 strobes, the only time I use them is to test if the batteries are still good by the brightness of the focusing bulb.

Just curious, but how does a Through The Lens (TTL) closed looped flash control system work on a point and shoot digital camera?

Why not use the PT-23 internal flash firing an external strobe in slave mode? Nick from Bali takes some of the best pictures with his PT-23
