I'll be in Brisbane in late January for four days and would like to spend all those time diving. I've done some research on this board and narrowed down my choices to either Byron or Moreton Bay. I'd like to get your opinions as to which one offers better dive sites.
Byron Bay or Moreton Bay?

IF it was me i would choose Byron (its never byron bay - its just byron to the locals
) and ive heard good things about these people; Dive Australia Scuba Diving with Sun Dive Byron Bay
but if diving Morton i would recommend a weekend liveaboard Big Cat Reality / Dive Tours of Moreton Bay or Nth Straddie Manta Lodge and Scuba Centre : Stradbroke Island
oh, and just a warning that school holidays dont finish until end of January and if you tie it in with Australia Day (Jan 26th) Byron might be crowded

I don't know anything about Moreton, but my first major scuba trip was to Byron (report HERE). It still ranks as one of the best places I've dived, and now I've been to Cozumel and Indonesia and the British Virgin Islands and Hawaii. We dove with Sundive, and liked them a lot, although I know that today, the time limitation on the dives would annoy me a little.
The life there is amazing. HUGE schools of fish, big and little; rays, sharks, turtles and many kinds of nudibranchs, as well as healthy, colorful corals and sponges. It wasn't difficult diving at all, although sometimes a little bit surgey, and it wasn't terribly deep. It was just, plain fun.
If you go there, I'd also recommend the place we stayed, Planula Lodge. It's a little ways out of town, but very quiet, and completely diver-oriented. The owners are both avid divers, and they have a lovely library of reference books upstairs where you can try to identify what all the things you saw during the day were.
Byron Bay also has some excellent restaurants and shops.
I'd love to go back.

Byron Bay. Julian Rocks is incredible...gray nurse sharks, load of wobbies, turtles, rays, macro life like nudis. I'm surprised that Byron isn't talked about among the best diving in Aus...and what a great place to spend time above water. Like someone else who posted here, I dove with SunDive and would really recommend them as well.

Both are great diving locations. I love the town of Byron Bay, its one of my favorite places. Both SunDive and Byron Bay Dive Center are great dive centers. Morton Bay has great diving too. You can't go wrong with either choice, but I would choose Byron Bay over Morton Bay.
