Buying packages online

I am new to diving and i am looking to buy my first set of gear, i will be doing most of my diving in new england. I was looking at buy a package from divers-supply.com it includes,

Tusa Platina Evolution BCD
Sea elite Tek X Regulator
Sea Elite Quest Octopus
Dacor darwin air computer

Would this package be ok, it would be about 900 all togeather.

Before buying, I'd definitely call Larry at ScubaToys and see what they can do to get you into a Zeagle. Mention scubaboard and you'll get a discount, not to mention, they will always put together an attractive price on packages and will match anyone's price.

They carry Tusa, and I don't know much about those BCs, but as far as I have seen, nothing beats a Zeagle BC except a BP/W. Look at the Brigade or Stiletto on scubatoys.com, and be aware that the price is much better once you call and talk to Larry or Joe about a package. They will really help with your selection, too and service your regs for life with free parts and very cheap labor. My wife and both my parents got full setups from them and the service just cannot be beat.

I'd get a Nitrox computer...ScubaToys has the last of the Aeris Atmos 2's, which I really like. Good deal on em too.

I'm sure it would be okay, but I personally wouldn't pick any of that gear. Talk to some folks who dive in the area regularly to see what they use, rent/borrow some different styles of gear to try it out, and shop around at both the local shops and online stores.

Check out the New England Lobstah Divers forum here on scubaboard for information about what's best locally, and do some research before buying. If you jump into it without really knowing what you want and need, you'll very likely find that like so many of us before you, you'll end up buying and replacing several sets of gear before settling on one you're truely happy with in the long term.

two comments on your package:

is the Darwin a console? if so, i assume it comes with a pressure gauge, right?
also, that's an air-only computer... so... if you want to do nitrox, you'll need
to upgrade.

the Sea Elite regs are Diver's Supply's store brand. they are cheap,
but some will say they don't measure up to first-class regs. i've
used a SeaElite Tech and have no complaints.

Welcome from Cape Cod to SB stangpb! If your diving out here in the winter you'll want to make sure your gear can handle the elements. What part of New England are you from?

I would not buy an air only computer. Even if you don't plan on nitrox now, you may later. It costs much less to simply buy the ability now than to have to replace the entire unit then.

Can i buy a computer that will work for me now with air and later with nitrox if so what would i be looking at?

i would reccomend the Aeris Atmos 2... it's the cheapest you can get into
Nitrox, and it's an awesome computer (i own one).

auto set up is 21% (air), and you can set Nitrox all the way to 40%
