I need a mid range canon camera for photos and film with 1080p. I'm looking into the canon s100, sx40, g11, g12 and the new gx1. So mainly I'm looking for great shots, great video and great macro. I keep hearing the g12 is great, however what should I get from the list I gave you? Are any of these camera good?

G11 or G12 are excellent, and you can pick them up gently used for ~$350.

sweet, however which ones better g11 or g12 ?

FYI. Since your requirement is video at 1080p, the G11 and G12 will not work for you. The G11 shoots video at 480p. The G12 shoots video at 720p.

The SX40, the S100 and the unreleased GX1 shoot video at 1080p resolution.

can you tell me from looking at the specs if the gx1 is better then the g12? I'm not the tech savy with cameras yet

The gx1 Panasonic is much better than the g12. Has interchangeable lenses, 5x bigger sensor, shoots 1080p @60fps, and 50% bigger resolution.

Or did you mean the G1X? Lol

Check this out about the g1x

From your options I'd say the S100 could be a great choice for you. In the ikelite or recsea housing you full functionality, and the options for add on lenses for macro or wide angle with ease.

Otherwise like folks have said, if you're not 100% locked into Canon some other options are great... the Sony NEX-5n is fantastic for video, and has the largest sensor in the smaller cameras which creates really sharp images.
