:doctor: Ok! So I go for my 2 week check up and suture removal after my shoulder surgery. Doc says, show me how much range of motion you have. Easy huh. I'm thinking, 6 back surgeries, lots of screws, bars, rods etc and my recovery during said fusions was a piece of cake. This will be a snap.

So I proudly show her the 'wonderful' range of motion I have due to my dedicated working at it to get into the water sooner. She looks at me, smiles and says, "yeah, that's what I thought. You aren't behaving yourself. The sling stays ON for 4 more weeks with NO CHEATING. Then she explained why.

The "anchors" she used are PLASTIC. Not only that but they are only to anchor the ligaments to the bone so they can reattach to the bone. They are also slowly disolving and will be reabsorbed by the body within 2 years.

If I don't stay immoble now and let the reattachment work, when the anchor disolves it will still be weak and reaccurance is likely. Bumber. 4 more weeks of TOTAL imobility before I get to start using it. Even the stretching and range of motion excercises she gave me are "assisted" by my wife. She does all the movement and I just lay there.

I am not allowed to do anything with my arm that requires my arm muscles to work for another month.

LDS is having a big sale tomorrow so I am picking up some weight pockets for my Transpac and a few goodies I may see. Just can't use any of them.

:lurk: Guess I'll just grab some popcorn and watch the movies...

agh...

hey, hang in there ... 4 weeks is not so long

can you drink lots of beer? that will really help

Won't help the 20 pounds I put on this winter... But, my elbow is still in well oiled condition.

Hi carldarl,

Great to see you back! I'm glad the surgery went well for you! Aren't forced surface intervals a drag?

I'm on an 8-12 week surface interval for my surgery, as well. Doc says I'm not supposed to lift anything heavier than 3 pounds with the arm for the next 4 weeks while the nerve "scars into place" in its new location, then I'm supposed to begin physical therapy. But, she said I could go swimming if I didn't use the arm, so I might practice my frog kick in the pool tomorrow... supposed to be 95 degrees :)

I hope your healing goes well and quickly! Glad you're back!

carl, i must have missed somthing somewere, what did you do ?or what happend to you, forgive me for asking, but i have been there, i was crushed in a car wreck, all of left side of body crushed, left femar, left arm,4 breakes to the pelvic bone,13 breaks to left side ribs, punchered lung, cut urethra, lots of fun, took a bit over a year to be free of a wheelchair, so i thought i would ask you , hope you dont mind!!

oh, jim. pretty impressive. we call that a t-bone in the business.

good you are still with us.

carldarl, behave yourself.

I had an open reduction and internal fixation of a collarbone fracture a few years ago. It's an unusual procedure, because the vast majority of collarbone fractures heal without intervention. And because of my size and my tiny bones, they couldn't even do the "standard" (can you call it standard when it's rare?) procedure, but had to go with one that is so infrequently performed that they could not give me an estimate of success rate pre-op.

Anyway, they sent me to PT after six weeks of immobilization, and I immediately exceeded what they told me to do. I managed to get myself into a situation where I actually damaged the joint through excessive enthusiasm for my rehab. The repercussions dog me to this day.

Do what they tell you to do, nothing more, nothing less. You'll get the best results that way. It's hard for us overachievers to hear.

WOW! sounds like you all taking a BIG BANG with all these surgeries, sudden t-bone accidents, fractures, etc etc, I just wanna know if it is safe to get back in the water after like 6 back surgeries ? Just my two cent but if someone told me they had all them surgeries on there back and asked to sport dive I would have to pass, but I know that you can still manage to do things with a bad back.

Always descending,
c.h.

carldarl,

Can you tell me the nature of your original injury. I just found out today that I have done some damage to my left rotator cuff, (we won't know the extent until we can get some imaging done), and I'm cpncerned that I'll be beached for the season.

I can lift tanks with no pain, (but that doesn't mean I'm not compounding the problem) but I have no idea what's invloved with this type of shoulder injury and was wondering if you had a similar injury.
