Building a one piece spearpole sling suggestions.

I have a 5’ aluminum JBL spearpole that had a one piece rubber sling.

From the info I have so far there is a plastic cylinder inserted in one end of rubber then taped together then feed into pole’s hole.

1. the original rubber was discarded.what would you Guy’s suggest to shove into the rubber as a stopper?

2. I’m thinking tapes glue will come undone first wetting? Wouldn’t string be preferred to tape? or is tape preferred until fine tuning slings to desired length then tie w/ string?

or tape protects rubber from chafing/rubbing on metal.

Been using this pole as a stringer and when there’s apparently nothing to shoot w/gun.

Stick it into sea floor to attract/ chum in marine life.

If I remember correctly I was holding the loaded pole at 4’. this w/ weak orginal rubber.

3. so I’m thinking the sling should be 2.6’ for optimium rubber strech do’es this sound close.

Objective spearing loin fish, these fish are fearless. they have taken over the atlantic from North Carolina whole state of Florida spreading to Texas.

the FWC care more about shortening/closing American red snapper season (they think ARS are almost extinct, they will be extinct soon if not addressing the loin fish invasion.I want to contribute to lion fish extinction in these waters. Rant over.
