Is the OTS Buddy Phone Reliable?

For the most part, yes.
I've heard that thermoclines may cause some mischief when at extended range, but that's not an issue in most situations.
I prefer hardwire comms myself.

You live in the area, why don't you swing by OTS and talk to them about the equipment. You never know, they might take you diving and let you try the gear.

Buddy phones are totally reliable and the industry standard for underwater communications.

I use Buddy phones and they are reliable but can be less effective if the diver is behind a rock or ledge or in a wreck. I also use the OTS military grade units that have a different frequency and they are even better. For bulletproof com it is hard to bear hard wire comm but then you are tied to an umbilical. Depends on what you are doing I guess.Buddyphones are good quality for the money and do work well.
