I hope to go in the Fall. I hear October and November are the very best months. I'd love a livabaord but they are so expensive, I'd probably stay in a dive lodge. I also like to explore local culture. I am in Indiana where there are not too many long range divers. Male or Female. Advanced secure safe diver.

HI, i'll be going to Lembeh/Raja Ampat in the fall. I can fly from the USA into Jakarta, Singapore or Bali. Bali is most expensive. I know Bali is a nice destination, but evrey thing I read on it now points to negatives like crowds, crime, mega hotels, tourist overwhelming the place. Is it as bad as they say or is it still a great place to go. How is the diving in the north west edge. I forget the name? thanks

Hi,

I'm heading out to Raja and Lembeh in October. I'm going with someone I met on another LOB. We got Raja Ampat with Aggressor on sale (33% off!) and then will head to Lembeh for a few days before flying home. I think our Aggressor sailing is already full but come join us in Lembeh (NAD resort) Oct 19-22 if you are there then!

I wouldn't say I'm "advanced" - almost to 100 dives and working on my DM right now but I am a safe diver always erring on the side of conservatism. :) My travel companion is flying from Chicago so we will meet in Indo - he's more experienced than I am and is a DM.

As with every country, there are some rougher areas and less desireable areas to be in. Just remember to travel smart. We were in Bali while focusing on Ubuud and Nusa Dua and we felt completely safe. We hired a driver who was very good and I'm sure that also helped. I feel less safe in some areas back near home than I did in Indonesia. It's fine.

We didn't have a problem with crowds, crime, etc. mega hotels are there but if you don't like them, avoid them. If you go do typical tourista things, you'll find hoards of tourists, especially places that have regular tour buses, etc. there's something for everyone. We are more the boutique, off the beaten path travelers on a budget and we had a blast in Bali. We travel low key and don't bring flashy clothing, jewelry, or personal belongings with us.

I first went to Bali in 1991 and on my trip in February of this year I loved it at least as much as I did then. The diving areas are a long way from the crowede areas in the south. Bali has excellent diving , it's great value and now with more international airlines flying onto Denpasar it's a lot more accessible than it used to be. But of course RA and Komodo are a lot better !

Did you do any diving? If so where is the best place? Thanks.

Bali is fine...lol

Just don't try to buy drugs off anyone. And don't buy the "homemade" alcohol. These are problems more or less in the Kuta and Seminyak tourist areas. Less of an issue up north around the dive sites at Amed, Tulumben, etc.

Diving can be hit and miss in Bali, but splitting your time between Tulumben (to dive the Liberty wreck) and Amed/Padangbai (for macro) is a good option. You can get day trips out to some of the other dive sites to see mantas and mola mola easily enough from the mainland.
