On a recent dive, my buddy called me over and was like "look at that!" It was pretty nifty...if you look at most hoses, it seems there are always little holes/dents in them at a preset distance from one another. Well, bubbles were coming out of the holes on his!! He'd just been diving the day before with another guy, maybe that had something to do with it? I'd never seen it and had no clue what caused it or what the bubbles were or anything. We concluded that it was alright and that we didn't need to scratch the dive, and neither of us noticed bubbles coming from his hoses once int he water. That made me think that some water got in his hose exterior coating stuff, and when it was pressurized again, the inner part expanded, forcing some of the water back out of the hose exterior. But if water can get into the rubber around your hose inner...well, it seems like that could cause the rubber to rot away faster or something. Someone please know what I'm describing and tell me why!

I presume this was a high pressure hose?

A high pressure hose has an inner layer and an outer layer. The outer layer has tiny holes in it. The inner layer has failed and is allowing air to escape.

Time to change the hose.

It's a brand new reg--this was maybe the 10th dive, and it was only 1 month old. ?? Also, this was not in the water, this was before we got in the water. Once in the water we both looked and checked for any bubbles and there were none.

I had the HP hose on my pony do precisely what JJw describes. I went back to my LDS and they swapped it out for me. It's obviously less than a year old. Anyway, the last dives or so, I've discovered the HP hose on my primary reg is now "bleeding" tiny bubbles.

Is there something that's making this happen, or is it just the curse of the bleeding hoses?

(Incidentally, JJw, I'd bet that if you look carefully while at rest, you'll find the bubbles. On the pony, I noticed them first coming out from under the hose protector, but then I saw them farther down as well, but in ever-decreasing volumetric rates.)

I have never had this happen, but it doesn't sound right. Underwater the bubbles will tend to be smaller and probably slower as well, so it could be that you just didn't notice. I would replace the hose and see if that fixes it.

Had it happen on a new hose.....if you buy something from the LDS, is it really new? You don't know.

this only can be the inner layer that has failed aat some point and is now bleeding air thrue the steel mesh between the layers.
so it's time to get a new hose

Sometimes bubbles get better/worse depending on how the hose is stressed.
It may or may not have been a faulty hose, but I suggest you (your buddy) put the regulator in the water pressurized and flex the hose every which way and see if it leaks. If it doesn't leak when that's being done, you should be fine. If it does, then you need a new hose. (And I think the store will replace it for you if it's pretty new.)

If it aint broke, dont fix it :D

change it before it blowes i saw a hp hose blow after bubbling last week luckly they were not to deep but looked like a wip and boy the air goes quickly, i have seen 3 others bubble in the last month we changed them all.
