I play a sport called Underwater Hockey at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia. Scuba Divers should make great converts to this sport, as they already have mask, snorkel, and fins and know how to clear masks and snorkel . The object is to push, pull, or pass the 3 pound plastic coated lead puck to teammates and put it in a 9 foot wide goal .We play in a pool about 7 feet deep and you hold your breath and dive down to play the puck with sticks about 1 foot long . The puck can be pushed a few feet or can be flung over 10 feet on a good pass.
There is no tackling or grabbing people or their gear allowed . Teams are coed and women are encouraged to join.
U.W.Hockey is played in other states(California,Florida,Boston,Texas,Ohio,Wisconsin) and other countries (Canada,England,Colombia,Germany,Australia, etc.) and you can find the nearest team on the website UnderwaterHockeyTourist .
UWHockey is usually played in indoor pools, and is good to keep divers in shape , especially in the winter and during bad weather when you can't exercise outdoors .
U.W.Hockey is played at GMU. on Tuesdays and Sundays and also about 3 miles away ay Oak Marr Rec Center in Fairfax on Thursdays . There are players coming from Northern Virginia,D.C., and central Maryland . The G.M.U teams website is at www.underwaterhockey.com or can be found at D.C. Beltway Bottom Feeders from most search engines ( I am not the webmaster ) .
A couple players that moved away are trying to start new teams in Richmond,Va. and Penn Stata (in central Pa. north of Altoona) .
Anyone out there heard what Nick Caloyianis is up to lately? I haven't seen him in a few years, he used to play Underwater Rugby years ago and made several underwater films shown on TV.
If anyone is visiting or lives in the D.C.,Northern Virginia area or Maryland suburbs between D.C and Annapolis and wants to try playing uwhockey, send an email to me , Frank Thompson , at Thompson45auto@yahoo.com

I totally agree. I'm in Toronto, Canada, and there's several different groups that play underwater hockey. Before Christmas I was playing it twice a week. It's a fantastic cardio workout, and sure does increase your ability to work those muscles while breath holding too.
