Now that I have a bp/wing with a weighted sta, ive noticed I need about 10 lbs of weight with my steel 120. I attribute the majority of the needed 10lbs to my drysuit, (Diving concepts, compressed neoprene, Pinnacle 200 w/200 g stretch thinsulate undergarment) but I was wondering about a few other things.

What do most peoples weighted sta and ss backplate weigh compared to thier own body weight? I put mine on a shipping scale and it came out to 19.5lbs. This was with harness (incl. crotch strap, small halcyon knife, and inflater & a atomic SS1 octo/inflater, dive rite SS tank buckles & bands. Its a koplin 1/8" medium bp. Doesent this sound about right weight wise for a bp/wing setup?
I have about 5 dives on this setup and while I havent dove it enought to offer a opinion, I have noticed that I want to avoid a weightbelt. So, what I did was to buy a few small dive rite pouches (not their weight pouches) and put them on my harness on the waist belt. I havent dove with this config yet, but hopefully it will be a good alternative to a weight belt. Has anyone else tried this and if so , was it a better alternative than attaching weight to your bp? My idea of the dive rite pouches was to keep the weight near the center of me and close to my hips.
I dont feel overweighted, but 20lbs with bp/wings sounds like alot of weight. My old setup of a jacket bc was 22 lbs of lead and that was fine. I probably could have even took a few off, but I only recently started wearing a drysuit. Before that, with a 7mm wetsuit I was at 18lbs of lead. I thought I would have been able to shed more weight with a bp/wing setup but maybe im wrong. Whats everyone else's experience been when switching over? I would have liked to check what my bouyancy was with 500psi @ 10' but since I was diving a 120 I never got the chance to get the tank that low. Maybe I should get a 80 and try it again?
I weight 173 and am 5'11. about 15% body fat.

I think you have to be overweighted...

By comparison, I have the Halcyon plate and I poured my own channel weight. Total weight of the bp plus channel weight (but not wing, harness, etc) is 14 pounds. In my drysuit (a trilam, but with bulky 300 weight fleece underneath) I put another 6 pounds on my waist for a total of 20 pounds.

When I dove a compressed neoprene suit (only a few times, but still), I wore 24 pounds on my waist and was good.. and this is with a BC that has lots of padding.

I'd say next time you go diving just take 2 pounds off the belt. Then take 2 more the next trip. Continue this until you can't hold a stop at 15 feet without grabbing something. Then add the 2 lbs back on and you're golden.

BTW, I'm 5'9, 195 lbs.

When I dove with a 7mm wetsuit and 7mm jacket with a low pressure 100 steel I use to wear 28 lbs of lead, now I am diving with twin 120's and a DUI clx 450 with a 400 gram insulated undies The only weight that I have added is a 6 lbs V weight and although sometimes I feel a little somewhat light it really works out perfectly.
