Moving to boynton beach on Nov 13th. Looking to get certified and get heavily into scuba diving asap. any suggestions/tips would be appreciated. Thanks... joe

You definitely should head out with Starfish Charters in the Lantana area. They are a great operation, very professional and at the same time, very laid back. You'll have a great time with them.

Enjoy the area! Lucky.

Look for dive shops that certify in the Pompano or Ft. Lauderdale area. The better diving is in these areas and you can build a good relationship with the LDS/Boat operators.

You said you want to get into scuba diving "heavily asap". Before you buy a ton of gear, make sure you can actually do any type of diving from a medical perspective. I have a friend who bought gear head-to-toe for cert., and can't submerge because of an ear problem. In other words, take it slowly, no matter how heavily you want to do it. Obstacles arise at the damdest times.

If you don't have one already, get a surfboard. There will be plenty of days in the Boynton area that will be too rough to dive, but you can still enjoy the ocean surfing.

Welcome to Boynton, and have fun! Good luck with cert.

I would recommend Splashdown Divers in Boynton Beach... I've done about 40 dives with them (including my PADI OW, AOW, and Nitrox) and I would highly recommend their PADI instructor, and everything about their entire operation.

I just did my OW cert with Pelican Dive Charters out of Boynton. Took PADI class in Merritt Island Fl- 170 miles north around Cape Canaveral with American Divers International. Loved the boat-Pelican 1. Captain and crew were nice and helpful to us 8 rookies on board. Did 2 dives on both saturday and sunday. Will be there this weekend with 8 more rookies doing AOW. 3 dives on Sat and 2 on Sunday. Come on down and see us off. I plan on diving as often as I can for the next few months. After this weekend I will take the plunge and go dive as a certified diver and not with an instructor- should be interesting.

First Joe Welcome to diving! 2nd get that c-card quick!
I would 2nd Splashdown divers in Boynton Beach too,They have a great group, shop, boat, ect,,. I have seen the instructors in action and wow to learn on a reef v.s. the cold dark quarry I had to first dive yuck! I dive with them as soon as I get down from Cold Wisconsin! The Instructors are a laid back, you will have a blast! and a c-card is needed if you live in Boynton, just ask any local about the bugs!
Get that card and hit me up drift dives are fun! best diving to be had PalmBeach area, shhhhhhhhhhhhh Most folks opt to spend big money to go to the islands! You will have it in your back yard.

Man In wish I was going out this a.m. with Splashdown and as Kevin would say
"This is going to be GREAT! "

I cast my vote for Splashdown Divers! I love diving the reefs of Boynton Beach, and this operation makes it a pleasure. Since the boat is docked behind the shop, you'll find your tanks already on board if you're renting gear. Everything else is just steps away so that you can try it on and check it out. The captain is very knowldegable, having served divers in this area for years. The crew is extremely helpful, from helping configure gear to placing you with the proper buddy. Check it out and see for yourself. You'll love it!

I would say to get a few dives under your belt with rental gear before you go out and buy everything. After you've been diving for a while, you'll learn what you need and what you want. Like you're supposed to have a snorkel, but does anyone really use one? Also, you'll find out what kind of gadgets are cool and which ones are truley useful.
