My wife and I are planning a Bonaire trip in July. Flying out of Florida. Both have 100-200 dives. Done some shore diving in FL so looking forward to it there.

Recommended places to stay? We tend to stay in the HI or Hilton style hotels when traveling vs budget. Don't mind resorts...its is vacation after all. Suggestions would be welcome.

Shore diving...we have done the sharks teeth stuff in FL. Is it similar to that? I have seen the board discussion about trucks and locks...think I am good there. Is that the recommended thing to do is shore dive or should be go with a dive outfit since this is our first time in Bonaire? We have done many dives in the FL keys and enjoy wrecks and reefs.

I am actually excited about this because SHE chose the island to dive at...and Bonaire has been on my list to visit for some time.

Just looking for some general guidance...I appreciate any suggestions!

No, it's nothing like sifting for shark teeth! It's vastly better.

Some here will complain that Bonaire diving has deteriorated in the last {insert number here} years. Perhaps so, but it's still awesome. Water clarity can be 100+ feet and there's plenty to look at.

Two sites in particular to make sure you visit: Salt Pier and Angel City. I swear you could spend a whole week exploring Salt Pier.

This might be the place you're looking for. Hilton branded and on the water; south of town.

Shore diving is a no-brainer on Bonaire. Plenty of great sites immediately to to south of you. You will need to rent a truck no matter what your plans are in order to take full advantage of all the island has to offer. Enjoy !!!

We generally stay at a dive hotel like Buddy Dive. Decent rooms and food. Very good dive op for shore or boat diving and easy access to a good house reef.

They have a dive and drive package that includes room, breakfasts, truck rental and unlimited shore diving. You can add some boat dives inexpensively if you wish to do so.

My only additional tip would be not to book at Buddy Dive during Kids Seacamp.

Bonaire is a game changer in terms of diving! Being able to dive on your own schedule and as many times a day as you like is amazing. We enjoy staying at Coral Paradise, which has a dive and drive package. Small property, 8 units, full kitchen, right next to Captain Don's Resort (but not waterfront). You can also add some boat dives to the package. Tanks are delivered to the property each day, which makes things super easy. We will be arriving at the end of October for two weeks, our 6th trip in 6 years!

Buddy Dive is a fantastic choice for first-timers to the island. I would recommend their package which provides accommodations, breakfast, a truck, unlimited air/Nitrox, and 6 boat dives. The boat dives will get you to Klein Bonaire, and some of the other northern sites not accessible by truck. The truck and air will allow you to take advantage of the freedom in Bonaire to shore dive when and where you want.

I would also strongly recommend you get a copy of Bonaire Reef Smart Guide. It's a fantastic guide to all the dive sites on the island and I wouldn't travel to Bonaire without a copy. There's also a ton of great info here on how to get the most out of a Bonaire dive vacation. It is called Divers' Paradise for a reason! Enjoy your trip!

Knavey - we have lived permanently on island for going on eight years now and happy to help any way that we can… we dive 5-10x per week and certainly have our favorite sites and shops and of course restaurants…
