Hey,

Planning a trip to Bonaire this summer, for 2 weeks. I've looked at a number of hotels suited for diving and found Harbour Village Beach Club quite interesting. Anyone stayed here? How are the diveoperations? How is the beach and the reef? We are inexperienced divers who wish to do very shallow diving on our own (check the other thread if you wish :))

Wonder if HVBC is suitable for our needs?

Thanks

Cobra, the diving in front of HV is great rubble diving -- lots of wonderful little critters and easy access to the wreck "Our Confidence". If you are looking for shallow a "house reef" you might want to consider Sand Dollar, Buddy Dive or Habitat. There is a small beach at HV which is very pretty. Can't speak about the accomodations or the dive operation there. Great restaurant, Patagonia, on the premises as well. Be sure to pick up a copy of Bonaire Shore Diving Made Easy by Susan Porter (www.bsdme.info) and also check out www.infobonaire.com and www.bonairetalk.com if you have not yet done so.

Thanks reefdiva! :)

How deep is the diving outside the resort(s) in general? And Our Confidence, how deep is she?

Thanks again!

If anyone has more to say feel free to write it up :)

The reef behind Buddy's has a sandy bottom, starts out about 5' deep and gradually deepens to about 25'(?), where there's a dropoff on to an incredible wall.

The large sloping flat area is great for snorkeling, and the wall is great for diving.

The area near shore is quite protected and has lots of cool fish, so you can even go with a non-diver and both of you will have a great time.

Terry

In general, the top of the reef behind the resorts on the West side starts at about 25' and slopes down to 100'+. It is not necessary to go any deeper than your comfort level. Many first-timers worry about how to navigate themselves back to the entry point, but it's usually not very hard as there are mooring lines installed all along the top of the reef. At least one resort (Captain Don's) has a rope line that extends from its dock in about 10' out to the reef and over the drop down to about 120'. This way, you can never get lost and may have more confidence with a night dive.
