A person has died in what is believed to have been a diving accident in Perth’s north.

The boat ramp at Hillarys Boat Harbour was closed for more than an hour on Thursday morning as more than a dozen police officers swarmed the busy car park.

St John paramedics were called to an area off the boardwalk just after 9am, with police later taking control of the incident.

Witnesses said they saw a police boat and officers carrying diving gear.

Local boatie Paul Henderson said when he arrived about 10.30am, police were speaking to two men sitting on the ground next to the ramp.

“The ramp had just been opened by police. It had been closed before,” he said. “There was a queue of boats, police had stopped people launching.

“There was a line of about six police cars and an ambulance. And then another car arrived, sirens blaring.

“Two elderly people were sitting talking to police, but we just thought someone had flipped a boat.”

By 11.15am police had left the area.

Another person told The West Australian he’d been told to park further away by police shortly after pulling into the harbour.

“They told us to move and then when we walked down we saw them carrying the ... body bag,” he said.

ICBW but I think the only reason to dive in Hillarys is to clean a boat.
