Has any one here dove Blue Lakes? The LDS has a trip planned and i am wondering about going. It is a 3 day jaunt so I figure that I can get a ton of diving in.

Are we talking about the place near Wendover, Nevada?

Ya, Ive dove there a bit, you can get in alot of diving... depths are from 15- 70 feet, seems like the water is around 65deg or so. visibility fluctuates alot depending on traffic, I would imagine that with all the ppl goin it wont be very good, but it makes for great limited vis and navigation challenges. there is alot to see on the bottom in the way of "redneck art" last year The instructors kid built a plane in his welding class and placed it in the bottom. They bring the compressor which is a must to get verry much diving in, and they put up a canvas city, so theres tons of protected places from the weather. skeet shooting on your surface intervals, lots of fun. drop me a line, as there are a bunch of us in your area that go diving every weekend, Im assuming from your profile that we certified you.... since we are the only SSI shop in SE Idaho

Blue Lakes are about 15 miles south of Wendover, Utah. The viz can vary from poor to awful. Parts of the bottom are quite silty and new-diver-lawn-darts stir it up badly. During the warm part of the year, the algea bloom is pretty bad. After the weather turns cold, that will clear up somewhat. Don't be surprised if you end up with 3 foot visibility.

There are NO facilities at Blue Lake. Take drinks and a cooler with you. Lawn chairs for the SI are good.

The water temp (fed by hot pots on the bottom) is about 75 degrees F year round. However, remember that the air temp is not moderated by the hot springs. When you get out of the water, and the wind is blowing (remember no facilities) it can be downright frigid.

If it has been raining, the "parking lot" can be pretty mucky. There is a board walk (primitive) for about a 100 yards from the parking lot to the lake. Watch your step. The constant flexing of the wood will pull some nails out to some degree or other. It is very hard on dive booties if you snag a nail. You have to sherpa all your dive gear over to the lake.

In the summer time the bugs are miserable. There are horse flies that HURT when they bite. Mosquitos are just bothersome in comparison. Take DEET laced bug spray.

You will be in the boonies. The access roads are rough and an ambulance would have a tough time getting in. Life Flight/Air Med flys out of Salt Lake City. Count on a forty five minute response time. Take sufficient first aid/O2 stuff in with you. There is a hyperbaric chamber at the U of U in Salt Lake.

Some people camp at Blue Lake. I usually get a motel room in West Wendover, Nevada. All the casinos have pretty fair buffets.

If you have never been to Blue Lake, the verbal directions are confusing. If you like, I have a dive briefing and maps courtesy of my DM class dive briefing project. PM me a regular e-mail address and I will send them to you. I don't know if I can send attachements via Scubaboard PM.

This won't be like diving in the Caribbean. :D

Good luck; dive safe.
