THE BOAT
Built in Kalimantan (Indonesian Borneo) in 2012 with selected tropical timbers, Oceanic was acquired by our company in 2017 and subsequently renovated fully to customize her for diving liveaboard cruises, applying all the knowledge acquired during the previous 16 years of successfully running Ondina.
Her numerous and spacious common areas make her a perfect choice for smaller groups, while her powerful engine provides good speed to explore the eastern regions of Komodo, Flores, Alor, and the Banda Sea.
ACCOMMODATION
A new upper-deck suite was added, which together with the lower-deck suite and the remaining four standard cabins (all with double beds and top bunk), comfortably accommodates 12 pax in 6 double AC/ensuite cabins. Three-gen sets provide an all-around-the-clock 220 v electricity supply, with two-pin European standard sockets.
What You Will See
With its scenic landscapes, rich colonial history, and wonderful diving, the Banda Sea is an incredibly interesting location. Part of the Ring of Fire, it is also the deepest sea in the world (up to 8.000 meters at its deepest point; Mariana’s Trench, the deepest point in the world, is 11.000). When French oceanographer J.Y. Cousteau visited the islands on board his research vessel Calypso in 1988 to study the effects of the lava flows covering the shallow coral gardens around the island of Gunung Api (Fire Mountain) after a recent eruption, he was astonished to witness the fast rate at which the coral was growing there.
The reasons behind this speedy recovery are the perfect conditions of water temperature, salinity, sunlight, and the upwellings from the great depths. These come packed with nutrients that feed an extraordinary array of hard and soft corals. Sheer walls colonized by huge sponges and sea fans, large schools of fish such as jacks, tunas and barracudas, and numerous sea snakes populating two of the islands of the group, all contribute to providing truly unique dive opportunities!
The Hammerheads!!
The chances are you have heard the stories of the big schools of hammerhead sharks in the Banda. It is true, in the Banda Sea we often see schooling hammerheads, especially when the water is cold (this has been a good year so far, with encounters on each of our cruises; check our recent postings on
social media), but sometimes the sightings occur at a distance, sometimes closer, and often quite briefly…
