Wow, I wouldn't be so anxious to put a damper on Tim's enthusiasm, and I'm generally considered to be a bit of a jerk.

Tim, I've seen a lot of people in miserable physical condition manage to scuba dive in relative safety, and it can be a great incentive to get serious about exercising regularly. It is, in the long run, safer than remaining on the couch contemplating it, and it certainly helps motivate me on the elliptical trainer. So you can embark upon scuba training and a fitness effort simultaneously.

As for Dad's teeth, well, apparently I didn't read all the relevant threads, but if Dad's okay with soup, I don't see the urgency. Don't let the naysayers diminish your substantial momentum--go for it.
