I am planning a trip for a group of friends and myself. We want to go somewhere tropical. So I am looking for somewhere within Mexico, Caribbean, ect that has great walk in snorkeling. I will be taking underwater photos at the same time so some diversity underwater would be great.

Any recommendations?

Take a closer look at Aruba, been there 6 times in three yrs, really nice shore entry spots w/lots of stuff to photograph. Check out my pics(member galleries), that'll give you a better idea of what to expect.

For walk-in snorkeling with good visibility a varied corals and sea life a few options are:

St. John - lots of fringing reef with varied types of coral. Some great beaches and restaurants when not snorkeling. plenty of turtles, southern and eagle rays and even seen a few reef sharks.

Grand Cayman - My favorite so far (have not gotten to Bonaire yet). Larger coral formations than St. John and generally better visibility. Comparable sea life, but have seen more larger fish here, including nurse sharks and even more rays. Beaches not quite as secluded as St. John, but even better restaurants.

Bonaire - As stated, haven't been yet, but every snorkeler I have met who has says it is simply the best in the Caribbean.

BONAIRE is the shore diving Capital of the World for a very good reason!!! The reefs are just feet from the shore, you wall right into water at any point on the west side of the island (over 100 marked dive/snorkeling sites) and you see coral and fishlife like no place else in Caribbean.

Yes, airfare there is more expensive, but you did ask where is the best. You will definitely get your money's worth if you go there!

From Nebraska... flights on Friday nights through Houston on Continental. You arrive on island first thing in the morning Saturday!

I have videos (we are divers but I would snorkel there if I wasn't diving...)

there are hotels right oceanfront where you can just walk right in the water to snorkel, some are cheap and some are not, but most have kitchens in the room so you can make your own meals or eat out.
