I am looking to find a up scale hotel in Cozumel. If anyone knows of some of the better hotels there that I can research, please post.

I will be bringing my wife and 2 children (6 and 12). I will be the only diver, and hope to get in at least 3 days of diving. I also want to stay at a place that might have a spa for her, and activities for the children.

Never been there, and really want to have a nice time.

Thanks to all who take time to post!

The resort that is generally conceded to be the "best" in Cozumel is the Presidente. Having stayed there with my family I can attest that it has all of what you are looking for.

Check out the Occidental Grand.

Take a look at Hotel Cozumel. It has the biggest pool on the island, for the kids, is only a mile from town, for the wife and shopping, and is very afforable. It has an onsite Dive Op called Dive Paradise which is OK. You might want to stay at that Hotel and use Christi's dive Op -she is a frequent posters on these boards and runs a very nice operation

Just came back and looked at most of the hotels from town to the International cruise pier. Hotel Cozumel is a great place that fits your description. It is not too far from town and most of the good dive ops will pick up at their pier. I always go with "Dive with Martin" and took a cab to the Hotel Cozumel to meet the boat each morning. (I stayed at Vista Del Mar in town. Very nice, but not as upscale as you described.) As a result I visited the hotel regularly during my stay on the island and had friends staying there.

They have lovely rooms including some that overlook the ocean, an optional all-inclusive meal plan that my dive buddies who were staying there said was reasonable and pretty good, the nicest pool in Cozumel and a good location. They have a pier across the street with an underground walkway to their "beach". Good place for sunbathing or snorkeling, but too rocky for swimmers/waders. They occasionally offer airfare specials through http://www.funjetvacations.com with airfare from places like Dallas, Austin, and other exotic places.

The other upscale hotels are quite a bit further from town or they are north of town and far from the dive ops. If you plan to keep a rental car that is no big deal, but otherwise the location of Hotel Cozumel is really a great asset.

I stayed at the El Presidente on my last trip and found it to be great for "non divers."' Next trip we're staying at ScubaClub, and it was a hard sell for the wife (hard beds, no phone or TV in the rooms, no massages, etc.).

You may want to think about how important it is to have a beach... I think for the kids this might be something to consider.

All the hotels south of the Presidente have beaches except for Fiesta Americana(?) I'm sure someone out there will correct me if i'm wrong. Most of the near town hotels have a sandy patch near the water but to actually get in the ocean you must clamber over the ironshore.

Look into:

The Presidente
Occidental Grand & Allegro(All Inclusive)
Iberostar (All Inclusive)

And from what I've read, stay away from The Reef Club.

Of those 3, I've only stayed at The Presidente, All Inclusives are not my thing but I've never had to tote around 2 kids either! The snorkeling at The Presidente is excellent.

Some of the Northern hotels have beaches as well but then you are a LOOONG boat ride away from the southern reefs.

If I left any resort out I'm sure someone will chime in.

Occidental Grand. Best hotel on the island. All Inclusive (if that isn't what you want, don't look here). Great beach and excellent quality for the non-diving spouse. Can't comment on the children's programs, but I assume they are quality as it is a first class operation in every other way.

All dive ops will pick up and the closest hotel to all of the southern (best) dive locations.

It is a way south location, so if getting into town is a priority, that may be a problem.
