Hi everyone,

Wanting to plan a trip to Cayman this March. I'm a single diver, so need to go on the cheap side. I'm an advanced diver with over 100 dives. Looking for combined dive shop with hotel. Something with small groups and a place to relax for a drink at night... though not a big partier. Have to keep the mind clear for next days dive! :D

Really not sure even which island is best? Would love any suggestions.

Thanks
LEP

We've liked Cobalt Coast (www.cobaltcoast.com) and the on-site dive op, DiveTech (www.divetech.com). They have dive packages including meals and lodging. Their boats might be larger than you're looking for, though.

For smaller dive boat groups you can't go wrong with Neptune's Divers (www.neptunesdivers.com) I don't think they have any deals with lodging, but it might be worth asking them. They'll pick you up anywhere along SMB. They might be able to recommend affordable lodging along SMB with meals included and easy access to other attractions.

You need to define cheap, as cheap and Cayman don't really fit in the same sentence. There also aren't many real hotel/dive shop combos on Grand Cayman like you probably have in mind. Sunset House seems like the obvious choice. I do like Cobalt Coast better but it's probably more. The other thing you could do is look into the Cayman Aggressor, maybe they have some deals going on. A liveaboard might seem pricey but since it's all inclusive it might be a better deal than land, especially if you figure it per dive. You might wind up sharing a cabin, but you could get lucky and get your own if the boat isn't full.

Have to agree that a liveaboard might be the best option. Cobalt Coast is great but with a single supplement will be $$$.
You might consider renting a studio apt at Morritts Tortuga club on the East End and diving with Ocean Frontiers. One is available with an asking price of $630/week here Timeshares for Sale, Timeshares for Rent, Timeshare Ratings, Timeshare Reviews, Timeshare Advice all provided by Timeshare Users Group
Thats about as cheap as a room gets in Cayman.

Another inexpensive option is Rocky Shore Guesthouse. Nothing fancy but run by nice people and only 10 minutes walk/3 minute drive from Cobalt Coast. http://www.getaway.ky/

Either of the above would need a car. (rent from Andys Grand Cayman Car Rental - Andy's Car Rental Cayman Islands)

I looked into this recently as a friend recommended Sunset House highly (thanks again, Dana!), but traveling as a single the single supplement made it off-the-charts expensive. Sure nothing in Cayman is going to be cheap, but the the single price is similar to to the single price on a liveaboard. Not everyone is excited about sharing a room or a cabin as a general rule, let alone with someone you've never met.

I would recommed Sunset House (Cayman Islands Scuba Diving Resort) ...
The weekly winter dive package single supplement at Sunset House for a courtyard room runs $600 (and goes up from there). In the summer the single supplement for the same deal is $725. That's for the "cheapest" rooms.

I'm sure Sunset House is great, but I'm not sure how that meets the OPs request:

 That's almost Cayman Aggressor pricing.

Lep,

Did you end up booking a trip? I'm a single diver as well, leaving 2 weeks from yesterday, and wondering about the 'single diver' experience...

Thanks!

Jen

Not exactly "cheap," but you'll have a great time at the Little Cayman Beach Resort.
