Have a Canon WP DC38 housing and wish to extend the range of the camera with a wide angle (maybe the Dyron 20mm) and a medium raneg macro lens. Looking for the best adaptor to use...Dyron have the 67mm. Delrin one (seems fairly lightweight but well designed and compact)....Inon seem to have only a bayonet lens adaptor (but it is very robust {if a little heavy}...and offers an accesory shoe mounting). And I also like the "Deeproof" adaptor which has a swing away mount (would be great for a macro lens but looks too lightweight to support a wide angle lens) see Deeproof M67 Mount Base DC38 for Canon WP-DC38 #RM67-DC38 . Just wondering if anyone has experience with any of these adaptors.:)

Hey Wiggsy, what did you end up going with for your setup? I have a new s95, and am thinking of going the Canon housing / Dyron 15 or 200mm / Deeproof adapter.
did you get any feedback / make a decision? thanks, DC

Yep - I got the Deeproof adaptor and the 20mm Dyron lens....Pretty impressed with both. I must admit that the Deeproof adaptor is incredibly convenient...but I am a tiny weeny bit concerned that the adaptor is not 100% parallel with the lens plane. This is due to a nylon washer on the pivot point...But It is a good setup and works well. Have a look at my gallery on picasa...https://picasaweb.google.com/104209...erwaterJuly2011?authkey=Gv1sRgCLffjZf5u7_RHg# . Most (but not al) of the wide angle photos are on the Dyron 20mm lens. I found the lens to be very crisp with no chromatic aberrations and no vignetting underwater...topside I did get a little vignetting on one corner only (this could be a result of either the lens not being 100% parallel with the camera's lens plane, or it couldbe due to the much publicised fact that the Canon sensors are not 100% centred to the lens barrel.

I saw in another post that Deeproof now have a lens adaptor with a red flip filter as well. What a good idea! Build quality is impressive and I love the lightweight, compact quality of the Dyron lens.

Oh and I should have added - yes I got the Canon Wp38 housing.....Less impressed I admit. Great ergonomics and very comact and surprisingly robust.....But...it leaked (only a half-teaspoonful but enough to stuff the camera's electrics) on dive number 6. Luckily I had a backup camera (my old Olympus have never leaked after 600 dives!)...

It may have been diver (me) error.....I changed batteries out at Apo Island (something I normally avoid doing....) Maybe a miniscule fragment of something stuffed up the sealing. I only wish I had stuck in a strip of women's panyt liner like I had in my last housing. I read a post by Dee ages ago suggesting this - it is just enough to absorb any minor spills and capture the water and localise it. It probably would have done the job and saved me the resort of the trip....So I admit that I will be way more carefull with the Canon housing in future. I got a new S95 with insurance so look forward to getting it back in the water. It does a great job wide angle, but I find macro a little struggle with lens hunting for focus. I will look into manual focus in future.

Hey,
great thanks for the info - good to hear that the Deeproof is built well - that was my only real concern, that it looked flimsy. I hate the idea of trying to unscrew a $300 lens underwater so i was happy to find that. And yes, the new one has the red filter on it....
I had a Canon housing (WP38 i think ) for an older SD550 and it never leaked.....so i think i 'm gonna go that route again....good idea about the panty liner - is that just to absorb and drops that might leak in? would stuffing paper towel around the inside work too do you think?
anyways - thanks for the response and great pics BTW!

Paper towel wouldn't be nearly as absorbent as panty liner.....And I think it could too easily move around and interfere with functions. Be careful, as the housing is so snug that there is little room to fit in anything. I was concerned that the panty liner strip could interrupt airflow and lead to condensation...But I certainly will out a strip in before my next dive.

Hi Wiggsy
A few questions about the deeproof adapter,
1) Does the Deeproof adapter "lock" into the open or closed positions? If not it would just swing around.
2) How does the camera feel while you are moving underwater when its open? You are basically adding a small sail to the front of the camera, does it feel less streamlined?
I have the Canon G11 in the WP-D34 canon housing, and would love to put a macro lense on. This looks like a really interesting option.
I'm trying to find the manufacturers webpage but no luck so far.
The Philipine pics looked great.

Hi Wiggsy
A few questions about the deeproof adapter,
1) Does the Deeproof adapter "lock" into the open or closed positions? If not it would just swing around. It has a stop when in the down position in front of the lens, but it lacks a stop in the open position. However, it does have a friction nylon washer that effectively provides enough resistance to keep it where it is put! Whether this will fail ater 50 dives or not only time will tell!
2) How does the camera feel while you are moving underwater when its open? You are basically adding a small sail to the front of the camera, does it feel less streamlined? Not a problem at all. The whole rig is pretty compact - I've always tended to turn the rig side on (I've had several camera rigs over the years) when swimming in open water or in currents to help slipstream it - funny how most photographers don't! The external flash unit is more of an issue, but, honestly, a bulky high volume BCD or a floppy inflator hose would offer more resistance

Thanks - I was quite pleased with a few reservations....I have noticed a slightly increeased amount of what appears to be noise. But it may well be more that due to the increased megapixels and sharpness, the image focusses everything - even specks of plankton. And there was a lot of plankton. But, I just need to be more aware of that. I also found any sharpening post production tends to kill the image.

Thanks Wiggsy.
I was just worried that when I'm not using the macro lens and have the camera in the portrait position it will swing back over the lens. I suppose you can just hold the camera so the lens is hanging downward, something to get used to I suppose.

It is on my Christmas wish list! Now to start dropping the hints to the wife!
The panty liner tip is brilliant.
