I have a chance to either go to Cozumel or Roatan, any suggestions or comments on diving preference?

Personal preference. I prefer Roatan, because the dives are more varied (IMO) and there were more shore diving opportunities, which meant I got in more dives per day (could be the choice of where I stayed).

I liked Cozumel, but it's mostly boat diving, mostly drift diving, and tended to be more crowded. I think, on the whole, the dive sites in Coz were more interesting, with swim-throughs and some pretty impressive walls. I thought there was more variety of life in Roatan.

What aspects of diving do you place more weight on? How do you like shore diving relative to boat diving? How would you value relative to one another: big animals, small animals, pretty coral, varied underwater topography? Have you done any drift diving before, and do strong currents bother you, because Cozumel can have that. What about the time you spend topside?--do you value anything about your dive vacation when not in the water? Personally, I give a few bonus topside points to Cozumel because it's in Mexico, and I just like Mexico, but not everyone cares about that. Everyone places different weight/value on different things.

Haven't dove Cozumel, but have Roatan many times. Lots of nice little fish. Not so many big ones. There's a shark dive further offshore. A lot of people prefer Utila especially if you like to party and live it up. The dives aren't that far off shore of roatan. IT's not very deep around the island. Some great snorkeling there.

We did drift dives but nothing crazy. Some turtles, stuff like that.

Well, I got back from Cozumel a week or so ago. I am a newbie, but had a blast. I kept think to myself how the vast majority of people on the earth have no idea what exists on the oceans.

I loved the diving, but topside a bit too much for me. We were getting
Harassed by locals to get us to buy stuff. "Come on in, almost free, two for one" I just wanted to walk around the shops and shop, not to be constantly harassed. But, at the same time, I found it incredible how poor many people there are, but the town is invaded with tourists with money to spend.

Back to diving,,, I have a long way to go with buyouncy control. I sucked air big time and was constantly trying to trim myself out. I feel totally comfortable, no panic, just calm, but frustrated I could not improve my buyouncy even after 10 dives. I have some more learning to do, so I am going back on November. This time I will likely stay at all inclusive and limit myself to the resort.

I haven't been to Roatan but Cozumel was awesome. Basically it's all drift diving. It's the Gulf Stream and the current is strong. You don't even want to try beach diving because you'll end up a mile away from where you went in. The only negative I can think of was that it's all about diving. There's really nothing else to do, unless you're perfectly happy sitting on the beach or by the pool reading a good book. My favorite part was an overnight boat we took that served dinner and we got in 3 or 4 good dives including a night dive. If you can, fly over to the mainland and see Chichen Itza or Tulum --- Mayan ruins... awesome.

... there's even less to do in Roatan than in Cozumel ... I wouldn't consider going there if you have a non-diver in your group ...

You don't have to fly. You can take the ferry over to Playa del Carmen and go from there.

Depends on the non-diver. Place we stayed, you could add all you can drink alcohol brought to the beach (or poolside if you prefer chlorine) by well-tanned nubile waitstaff in tall glasses with little umbrellas in 'em. All for measly $150/wk.
