Maredsous:
The Occidental Grand has five restaurants, great food, and fatastic grounds and facilities. However, it'll cost you! All the best diving is right there off shore, but it's a long way from town.

I am staying at the Grand in 2 weeks. Is there diving off the shore in front of the hotel?

No shore diving; but the reefs are VERY close.

just got back from the OC grand last night.

We are not AI-types; (only been to one AI- sandals ocho rios 6 yrs ago, wife had never been to one) nor would we ever go on a cruise ship, so our comparisons are limited. I am a real 'foodie,' however.

The food was, on par, VERY good.
Breakfast was great with a nice omelette bar. Lunch was somewhat limited but still pretty good. We had dinner in the buffett (good), Los Olivios (outstanding), the Steakhouse (very good), and the pizza joint (outstanding).

We were very happy with the food. Sanitation seemed more than adequate (i'm a physician). The biggest sanitary breach was the redneck (customer) grabbing tortilla chips with his hands....

Service was nothing short of outstanding.
We tipped consistently; which was well-deserved.

Drinks were very good; wish there was more of a beer selection (only corona on tap- i hate corona)

The worst part of the trip was, like most places i travel overseas, the 'ugly american' factor.
i'm sure i'll get flamed for this BUT WHY IS IT THAT IF YOU ARE TEXAN YOU THINK THE REST OF THE WORLD SHOULD THINK AND ACT LIKE YOU???!!!!!

OBNOXIOUS PEOPLE!!! (from 10-60 years old)

Stereotype? Maybe, but...
Let's see, everywhere i have been in the carribean, 9+ countries in europe, canada:
same phenomenon

enough said.

OC grand 4.5 *'s for us

You have been to Hotel Cozumel and I doubt if you can find any worse. Reef club is also pretty bad but a clear 2nd to HC. Allegro is OK but the best I have found so far is the Occidental Grand. You will gain weight. Scuba Club Cozumel has pretty good food also as well a decent shore diving for Cozumel.

So, do you think that all black people just loooove fried chicken and watermelon, too? ;^)

I know plenty of folks from Texas who are gracious and considerate to the people who live in the places they visit (I like to think I am one of them), and I have seen plenty of folks from other locales in the US that are obnoxious a**holes abroad. Please be careful with that broad brush of yours.

I find it interesting that the Reef Club has such a bad rap. My wife and I started going to Coz in the mid 80's and always stayed at Casa Del Mar (got married there in '89) due to my working at an airline and getting a good price. That was BC (Before Children) so we stopped in '92 when my son was born. My son got his open water at 10 (my daughter is 4 years younger and can't wait for 10) and we now had an excuse to head back. We tried RC in 2002 and loved it, so much for the kids to do and thought the food was reasonable. Went back last fall and thought the food was better so we're heading back 12/15-22 this year. Is the food as good as some of the restaurants downtown? No. Is the food better than some restaurants downtown? Yes. I don't care for their beef but that goes for all the beef south, it's range fed instead of corn fed. Personally I grew up eating more poultry than beef and that's what I choose if there's a choice. The poultry dishes are generally good with some being very good. My biggest gripe is how they cut the chickens up down there, more of a quartering through the bones. In the end we're there to dive and not looking for five star all the time, just like at home. We eat at the RC a majority of the time and venture downtown for a change. Going downtown in itself is somewhat of a hassle due to the cruise ship crowd.

Gordon, well said :yelclap:

I agree Gordon. There are people from all walks of life. You shouldn't judge at all but if you must don't judge by a small few. Based on my experiences, living in Texas is like living everywhere else when it comes to people. You can't have good w/o having the bad....the few

I agree with your statements; my characterization of texans was not based on a global stereotype of them; just personal experience. It is a shame that so few people can darken the image of a group- but it has.

Hmmmm, I guess you're right. And those Germans, with their "Achtung!" Don't you just hate those guys? And Jews, with their minoras and silly little caps, whatta bunch of jerks! Oh, and Mexicans, they are all so lazy; how do they ever get anything done? And white people, didja ever see white guys try to dance? Am I leaving anybody out?

The shame is, in my opinion, that some folks see people of a particular group acting like jerks, and then try to pass off a generalization that all members of that group are jerks as somehow the fault of the group itself.

I'm done with this. My apologies for the tangent.
