My wife and I are planning a trip to Beqa Lagoon in Fiji this August. I've heard from some other travelers that the coral is getting damaged in that area. I've also heard that it's hard to get in more than 2 dives a day, and that the shore diving isn't that great. I would appreciate very much hearing about the experiences of other divers who have been there recently.

Thanks so much,

Mel

To a certain extent, this is true. The Beqa Lagoon area is not trampled by any means, but was definitely showing signs of wear and tear at well-frequented dive sites. We also were shocked to see graffiti - yes, graffiti - written onto some large corals.

I've also heard that it's hard to get in more than 2 dives a day,
Assuming you are staying at Beqa Lagoon Resort, this is absolutely a true statement. You can shore dive in the afternoon, and maybe get in an extra dive or two, but it's an inconvenient process that you quickly burn out on.

and that the shore diving isn't that great.
This depends on your ability to swim and the tides. Our stay, the afternoons were outgoing tide and the vis sucked. We did get in one morning shore dive with fresh ocean water and the vis opened up considerabaly, still, it was only about 60'-80'. As far as condition, the close in (to the dive locker) coral does show wear although it's nice. We did scooter one shore dive, and went far beyond what the average (or above average) diver would swim to - about 1/3 mile - and the hard coral was absolutely spectacular.

I would appreciate very much hearing about the experiences of other divers who have been there recently.

Thanks so much,

The resort is great. The folks that maintain the grounds, clean your rooms, and the food and waitstaff are all exceptional. I'd go back, just keep in mind that Beqa Lagoon Resort is a vacation you incidentally dive on, not a diving vacation.

All the best, James

Thanks a lot for the info, James. Did you rent the scooter at the resort? Do you have to be certified in dpvs to rent? If not, that sounds like a lot of fun.

Mel

Mel, we brought our own scooters, they hadn't even seen a scooter before.

I have seen some places that rent them, like the Bahamas, usually (IIRC) they don't require a DPV card.

All the best, James

A DPV card? WHAT?!! Another money-maker for PADI?
