Your page is not at all intuitive. You do need someone on land to code for this site. I know tcp/ip inside and out, yet it took me about ten minutes to find where to find a "hello" field.

That experience is really an annoyance, and it's so unnecessary. I don't know who codes for ScubaBoard, or who does the layout for your pages, (first or homepage, subpages, etc), but you've got to improve.

The needless confusion regarding a mere "hello, I'm new" field is really a disadvantage.

Trust me, you change your page to be more inviting, including using the user's name on every page, and allowing one to post his/her own avatar (or emoticon or smilie) will go longer than you would ever believe.

At the moment, this is one user unfriendly site.

I'm wishing you well, and greets to NetDoc, the Team, as well as any who have joined this site.

My first post may seem harsh, but it's not at all. It merely describes the least of what's expected of a page for anyone attempting to navigate a new site.

In addition, it's also bad form to insist that one "Meet and greet" the first time one has entered. People prefer to look around before they commit to any comments, and nobody likes to be consistently told what to do.

thanks again,

First welcome to :sblogo:

The introduction and Greets forum is the fifth forum listed from the top of the forums page. It might be easier to make it the first, but whatever. One can also scroll over the forum heading on the top of the page, and get drop down menus to access the forums. So there are at least two ways to find into and greets. When I first joined, I think it took more like a couple of minutes to navigate to the intro and greets area.

There is no RULE that one must introduce themselves to post in other forums. Members are welcome to post anywhere they have access on the board once registered.

One can easily include Avatars, and emoticons when posting. Emoticons are to the right, and on the bottom when posting. Avatars are setup in the user profile.

When viewing a thread, the posters profile, and avatar appears on the left side of the post. It would make no sense to put a user profile on a page that has no user Posts on that page.

We ALL live on land (well maybe SOME spend more time on boats) but fish did not design the site! :D The designers would be VBullitin, so this is package software.

I log dives for my personal enjoyment, you may want to as well. Some maybe just for reference. But I can relive my diving memories by viewing my log, and it is enjoyable, and does not take much time to log such entries.

In any event, you may want to spend more than 10 minutes viewing a site before reaching a conclusion.

Give it a chance, you may find you like it...:eyebrow:

Welcome to ScubaBoard. Your comments are appreciated. Usually it takes a few posts before the user is transformed into a grumpy old man. :losecool:

Might I direct you to the "Whine and Cheese" forum? It's great. Very cathartic. Try it out. :D

Uh. But seriously, what makes this site great is all of the knowledgeable divers out there who help answer any and all questions. Enjoy the site.

And, except for the MOF, seldom bite you.

HI Seapanther. Welcome to ScubaBoard.

I do not know tcp/ip inside and out, but I find this website to be quite intuitive. Now, I will admit that it has a ton of features, and like other feature-rich websites, you may find yourself still discovering some of those features a year from now. However, just a very little bit of effort will reveal all of the features necessary to enjoy this site and enjoy all of the members who are more than willing to give you their opinions and let you take advantage of their vast experience.

You have made a good start. You have voiced an opinion that the coding on the website sucks. Like all of us, you are now a participant....advancing your opinion about the first of many issues about which you will eventually opine.

Quantcast estimates that approximately 46,000 unique individuals visit ScubaBoard each month. That is a lot of people....and we have to assume that a good number of them arrive here out of an abundance of interest in scuba diving. Of course, some just arrive here by accident. But, that is the case with any website that is indexed on the major search engines.

Let us know if you have any questions. Start a thread of your own or join in on one of the THOUSANDS of active conversations already in progress.

Hi Seapanther-I am not a forum or computer site specialist. In fact I am illiteret in PC speak. When I found this forum it was difficult for reasons of inexperience with computers. As time and playing with the site has progressed I am very comfortable with the set up. The 'figuring out' time really did not take that long. Also if I saw the 'you have to say hello' thread I must have rebelled against it. It was a while before I posted after signing up. I hope they dont change it, it would be like telling me I have to put my mask somewhere else. (MOF):rofl3:(these where very easy for me to figure out and use also).:D Glad your onboard wisdom is always used here.

Welcome to ScubaBoard. . . like everything on the web, the programers that rule the world, are being overthrown by the masses. The revolutions throughout history overthrew governing by the aristocracy, and surrendered to the masses. We divers are a very unruly bunch. And, Net Doc is ruling us with a soft touch, rather than a steel fist. You show expertise in code. . . Net Doc shows expertise in divers.

Vive la revolution. Come to Louisiana or Texas and kiss an alligator gar. :D

Hey there, mudhole, et al,

Thanks for your thoughtful repliles. Nobody really likes to hear anything negative about their product; I don't blame them. This is one more instance where something written is easily taken in a manner in which it was not intended.

It would take quite a bit to change me into any kind of man since I am female. Some will take my post in a healthy manner; some will take offense. I just may have used too harsh of an approach; however, I stand by my post.

Nonetheless, I've been certified since 1974, and have been scuba diving before that as a kid. I've got no problem with technicalities in or out of the water thus far, and for that I'm thankful.

Interesting that I was advised to keep a log. I agree with that. I did keep a log up to 1700+ dives: easy to do since I live in Miami and in the NE where the river dives are great--it never fails to surprise me when I surface and see mountains and cliffs on either side of me. That log went into the Gulf Stream and I've never kept one since.

To those who choose to interpret my post in any manner please do so. I promise not to come after the nay sayers with a Hawaiian sling.

Keep up the good work you are doing here with ScubaBoard; I've already passed your URL on to a few friends and a group with which I regularly dive.

Knowing tcp/ip and expertise in divers are not mutually exculsive. Anyone may just know both.

Y'all stay wet. And be safe.
