David Clendenen has been drawing, sketching, and painting all of his life and began SCUBA and free diving eleven years ago. He recently combined his love for art and the seas in a series of prints and posters entitled The North Coast.
Since becoming a certified diver in 1994, David has frequently dived off the central and northern California coasts. Their beauty and magnificent imagery have been the inspiration for his most recent pieces of art. This stretch of coastline between Big Sur and Mendocino is renowned among divers for its kelp forests and cold waters. Rocky cliffs overlook the open Pacific and the routes of migrating whales. Monastery Beach in Carmel features the tip of the Carmel Trench, a submarine canyon that plummets thousands of feet through the edge of the continental shelf, affording rare glimpses of pelagic creatures that rise from its depths. Curious, sometimes playful harbor seals make for amusing dive companions there. From Bodega Bay northward, abalone, spiny sea urchins and other fauna flourish spectacularly.
