I have been to the beach (mostly Florida) every year since I was young. I Love the water :water:. We typically stayed/stay in resorts/condos/hotels directly on the beach. Is beach diving alowed from most resorts/condos/hotels that are on the beach? Can I just gear up and walk in from your typical location? I realize that there is no gaurantee that the dive would include stuff to look at (fish, coral, ships, whatever), but I am VERY easily amused  just being underwater inandofitself and would love the practice anytime.

Unless something new has evolved that I don't know about, the Resort doesn't own the beach, much less the water, so yes, in fact that is what I and most all of my dive buddies have been doing for years.

The thing about florida, is I don't know how much diving is readily accessable by shore. But this place will tell you at least some of them.

I do. I haven't been arrested yet. If you dive where there are life guards it would be a good idea to ask.

I'm not even looking for what I think you mean by "readily accessable diving by shore"...Every beach I have ever swam at has, deep enough water, close enough to the shore, to scuba.

If you see angry people running toward you...
Submerge :D

good idea! I'm not sure what to do if they follow me in the water though...perhaps I'll offer my octo if they don't have one...they probably wouldnt even give me the courtesy of giving the OOA signal.

what he means is diving a sandy area can be boring quickly - some structure attracts fish which makes the dive more interesting - I have heard in Ft Lauderdale there is a shallow reef a couple hundred yards out; Ft Pierce I think has a wreck close to shore; as far as other place I don't know

What area do you normally stay in? Some areas are better that others as far as reef or other structures close enough to the beach. The reef lines off SE Florida run north and south along the coast. The problem is the boating traffic. Some areas such as maybe South Pompano to Ft Lauderdale have mooring buoys off shore for boats to tie at the first or second reef line. You can see them from shore. Just make sure you have a dive flag and watch out for traffic.

That's the problem, I know exactly what he means, and I'm telling you a sandy area is not a boring dive to me. Every time I have been to the beach (uncertified), I swim under water, to the sandy bottom, for two mins or so at a time, and repeat this for hours. I am thoroughly at peace and entertained. I already know all about the good shore diving locations, and I will no doubt make my way to them eventually.

Thanks Tom!

I was thinking of the closest beach to me, which is Tybee Island in Georgia...but my guess is the reefs off of Georgia's coast are farther out than those in Florida. BUT, and this is a big but, I'm not looking for anything in particular under water (with respect to the context of this thread), I'm just looking for water. When I do want to find places that include reefs/ships/whatever, I already know where to go.
