It took some doing, but I finally got it. NOT by opening the battery cover, NOT by using a watch case-back tool to unscrew the case-back (well not initially), but by using a slightly-modified nylon spudger and a mallet by using one of the case-back's notch slots and carefully tapping it to let-loose the seal the factory put on it. I was careful to mark where the case-back lined up with the case, and after changing the battery, cleaning any dirt that was on any sealing surfaces and replaced the O-ring I made sure the marks lined up again. Pretty simply once that factory seal let loose.
Oh, and it works fine too, so that was a lot of saved time and money.
I hope this helps others who encounter the same issue I did when I went to do a simple dive computer battery change. It sure doesn't seem like something you should have to send back the the manufacturer to have done. Plus, they give you the instructions in the manual, so it's not like you're out of bounds for doing it yourself.
