I'm going there in January. What is the diving like? Are there dive shops aplenty? Would one of the shops take me on a refresher before I go or should I do the refresher at home before I go? Any recommendations of where to dive and where to avoid?

Yes, how'd you know?

They do have a few hotels in Mexico, just a guess.

You have the onsite operator, Dressel Divers and you have a couple of other options. Aquanauts in Puerto Aventuras ($5.00 by taxi) or Bahia Divers on the Beach in Xpu Ha ($5.00 by taxi) for reef dives.

If you are interested in a Cenote (cavern) dive, I have been operating in the area for over 7 years now and could also help you out.

Enjoy your time here, I have only heard great things about the resort you are staying at.

Cheers,

Dennis

Anyone know if I can get a refresher dive in at this location before I do some real dives, or if I have to get the refreshers in before I to to Mexico?

They asked most of the divers to do a quick pool session. Funny thing is, all of the "competent divers" had no issues with this. Every guy that managed to "talk" his way out of doing this turned out to be someone with real issues.

From what I saw most everyones first dives were 40-60' easy drift dive. Then after one of the DMs made a note about how you looked, the next dive was based on that.

However, keep in mind that this is mexico, and if I have learned one thing, its, "just because they did that yesterday, has no bearing on today"

They were a good tourist outfit that was convienent. I had no issues with them, however, the next time I go, I will probably look for a smaller more private co that is willing to go in a smaller group of only 2 divers.
