Can someone compare diving between Barbados and Belize? Looking at both locations as a possible June 2011 trip. Any thoughts or suggestions requested. Shops, places to stay, etc. Diving with wife and 2 teenagers and we have about 12 dives and been to 60 feet so far. Last dive was in La Paz, BCS, in December. Thanks.

I went to Belize about 4 years ago and it wasn't that appealing to me. However I have talked to many other divers and they loved it.

I have been to the Cayman Islands...so I was expecting something like that. So I must have had my expectations too high (having never had something to compare Caymans to)... Our "guide" stood on the reef. We conned him into staying on the boat one dive, but when we surfaced...he was stoned out of his mind, bob marley BLARING across the ocean. And don't get me started on the time he dove in his boxers. (OK, these issues are with the guide/shop, not the reeft).

I just got back 2 days ago from Bonaire and I have to say, my memories of Belize diving (not the guide issues) would rank it at a 5 out of 10, with Bonaire and Caymans being an 8.

But as I said before....other folks must have gone to a different reef area because they loved it! :)

have fun!

When you just say Belize, well it's a large area and the diving and everything varies.

I've been to Belize 3 times and like the diving alot (much more than ABCs, almost as much as the better diving in Cayman) - but I've always done Belize by liveaboard. So most of the diving was out at Lighthouse and little at Turneffe. We did do some diving in southern Belize on one trip and didn't like it as much (though it still had it's moments, as we dove with dolphins and met some humongous old turtle. Is that guy still around, the blind one that will swim right into you if you don't move out of it's way?)

We liked Belize diving but most of the good stuff is further out so it takes some time to get to the dive sites. (1-2 hours) We also dove on the south end in Placencia. It was a deep blue dive looking for the whale sharks. We were there in May which is the start of season but if you talk with most they will tell you to wait a month so June should be good for that. If it wasnt for a playful pod of dolphins diving with us it would have been an uneventful dive helping with our buoyancy.... Check the full moon schedule if you are considering the whale shark dives. Otherwise stay north towards Caye Caulker and Ambergris. Sorry can't help you with Barbados...

Thanks for all the input and pm's. Have a trip planned to Barbados for June. Belize is also on the list but AA airline sale to Barbados sealed the deal. Thanks again.

Be sure to do a trip rpt.!
