Banco Chinchorro... Well off the beaten path, how about XTC Dive Center and the Flying Cloud Hotel. The way Mexico was 50 years ago. A 5-hour drive from the Cancun Airport. Xcalak and the Great Mayan Reef. Reefs, wrecks and more!

Summer - July, August, and September - is the season to dive the amazing reef at Banco Chinchorro.

"Xcalak is on the tip of a peninsula that borders the Caribbean to the east and Chetumal Bay to the west, which are part of a unique, extremely connected and bio-diverse eco-system made up of 15 miles of protected coral reefs, mangroves, rivers, lagoons and bays that make for a nature lover’s paradise."

Check the outside of the East side of the reef. My wife and I left our 26 foot sailboat "Marjan" on the reef on 18 October 1975. Sailed that boat from San Diego through the Panama canal to Swan Island. Left Swan island towards Cozumel when the weather packed up and we couldn't get a celestial fix for four days. Ended up running onto that reef at 10:00 PM.
