Headed to Bali in Dec, landing in Denspair. Anyone have any good hotel recommendations for me, close to town and not toooooo expensive?

Ahem, It's Denpasar.....You will find that nothing is very expensive there. It is a great place to take a dive/tourist trip. While the diving isn't as good as, say, PNG, the topside touristing can't be beat.

Which town do you want to stay in? The many dive boats leave from Sanur for Nusa Penida and Lembongan.
There's Ahmed with access to Padang Bai and Gili Selang.
There's Tulamben with the Liberty Wreck and the surrounding walls and muck.
Then there's Menjangan with the wall and bay.
It is also the access way to some of the best diving in the Indo-Pacific (including PNG). Komodo NP, the lower Sundas, Alor... all within reach of Bali by boat or plane.
It's a big island.
