I am not a real fan of spare airs myself, but I can see one possible use. Often people diving together are not always just a few flipper-lengths away from each other. In certain cases (???) perhaps the spare air would give the out of air diver the time to reach her/his buddy without panicking. Then once with the buddy, the two could share the other's air to the surface. Anyway, just a thought.......
